Education Week | A Classroom Management Training Helps New Teachers Send Fewer Kids to the Office

In an article about classroom management and disciplinary referrals, Education Week highlights a study co-authored by Assistant Professor Jing Liu. The study found that most disciplinary referrals were often made by new teachers and impacted students of color at higher rates than their white counterparts. 

According to the study, “roughly 5 percent of teachers were responsible for nearly 35 percent of office discipline referrals,” often for subjective reasons. Liu and his colleagues concluded that employing classroom-management training could aid in closing racial disparities in discipline.
