The student teaching experience can be the most exciting and rewarding experience of the teacher preparation program.  It is a time to draw together all of the information you have learned and immerse yourself in the reality of what will be expected of you when you take charge of your own classroom or case load.

As a teacher intern, you are expected to comply with a full range of professional responsibilities while in the schools.  That includes conforming to all of the regulations that apply to your mentor teacher.  It is expected that you will keep the same hours, attend the same meetings, and in general behave as though you were an employee of the school system.

It is very important that you take the initiative to include yourself in the routine of the classroom as quickly as possible.  We suggest that soon after you arrive you talk to your mentor teacher about how he/she expects you to participate both directly, while teaching, and indirectly when not.  Observing is fine for a period of time, but it is important for you to become actively involved, and to get to know the students.  Having the time to practice and grow is the essence of this experience.  Student teaching provides the opportunity for you to have a team of individuals working together to assist and support your growth and development.  It is important for you to take advantage of the full range of professional opportunities during this time.
