College of Education Admissions
As a Professional Education Admission Program, the College of Education has a number of requirements that students must meet in order to be admitted into these programs.  This process varies depending on the intended education major:

Secondary Education and Special Education
(Pre-Professional Program Admissions)
New transfer students who wish to major in Secondary Education or Special Education may be admitted directly to the Pre-Professional Program in these majors by meeting the following criteria:

  • Completion of Fundamental English Requirement (ENGL 101) with a “C” or better.
  • Completion of Fundamental Math Requirement (MATH 110 or higher) with a “C” or better.
  • Cumulative Transfer Grade Point Average of a 2.5
(NOTE: Admission to the University may require a higher GPA)

NOTE: Students that do not meet these requirements, but are admitted to the University, should strongly consider changing their major to their content area.  For information on the content area majors, please refer to the Secondary Education section in our Undergraduate Programs page.

Once admitted to the Universiy and the Pre-Professional Program in Secondary or Special Education, students must then apply to the Professional Teacher Education Program within their majors.

Early Childhood Education and Elementary Education
New Transfer students who wish to major in the Early Childhood or Elementary Education must meet the criteria to apply to the Professional Program in these majors.  While students may be able to meet some of these criteria while at their previous institutions, there are some requirements that the students must fulfill here at the University of Maryland.

  • Completion of Fundamental English Requirement with a "C" or better.
  • Completion of Fundamental Math Requirement with a "C" or better.
  • Cumulative Transfer Grade Point average of a 2.5
(Note: Admission to the University may require a higher GPA)
