Graduation Ceremonies

Spring 2008 Commencement

  • When is Spring graduation?
The Main Spring Commencement Ceremony is on Thursday, May 22, 2008 at the Comcast Center. Graduates should plan to assemble by 5:45 pm in the Comcast Center (exact location will be announced). Parking for students will be available in Lot 4B and the Terrapin Trail Garage. You should wear your academic regalia and line up by college. Tickets are required for the Main commencement. For more information see the Q & A section of the main commencement website www.commencement.umd.edu.

The College of Education graduation ceremony will be held on Friday, May 23rd at 3:00 p.m. at the Cole Field House Student Activities Bldg. Candidates will assemble in the tunnel area (ground floor) at 2:15 p.m. Marshals will be present to direct students to appropriate assembly areas. Contact Dr. Kathy Angeletti (301-405-2358; email: kangel@umd.edu) for questions or to help to make arrangements for people with disabilities. Arrangements for people with disabilities should be made by May 15, 2007. No tickets are required for the College of Education ceremony. Students should plan to attend both the main commencement ceremony and the college ceremony. The main commencement is designed to bring the entire graduating class and their family and friends together to participate in a university-wide formal ceremony. The college ceremony is of equal importance, especially since each graduate will be individually recognized.

  • How will I know if I am graduating with honors?
Summa cum laude, magna cum laude, and cum laude are the commencement honors for excellence in scholarship. To be eligible for this recognition, at least 60 semester hours must be earned at UM. No student with a grade point average less than 3.3 will be considered for a commencement honor. Because grades for a term generally are officially recorded after the term’s graduation day, computation of the student’s GPA will not include grades for courses taken during the student’s final semester at the University. However, the hours taken during that semester will apply toward the 60 credit requirement.

The breakdown for Commencement Honors for the College of Education for Spring 2008 follows:

    • Summa Cum Laude: 4.000 - 4.000
    • Magna Cum Laude: 3.941 - 3.999
    • Cum Laude: 3.895 - 3.940

    More details to come

    Exit Surveys for Graduating Students

Each year, the College of Education surveys graduating students to determine how education programs can be improved. Your participation in the survey is important to the College as it enables us to evaluate our strengths and weaknesses. More importantly, this survey gives you the opportunity to assess your professional competence and to evaluate the University of Maryland's performance in preparing for this important endeavor.

If you are a student graduating from a College of Education program this semester, you will be receiving a letter asking you to complete an exit survey. You may reach the exit survey web site from this page, but your letter will have information and instructions on how to access the password-protected surveys.
