Graduate Student Resources
Step-by-Step Toward Graduation
Conducting Research and Approval
At the University of Maryland, all research that involves the use of human subjects requires review and approval by the Institutional Review Board (IRB) prior to the initiation of the research. Each proposal must address the seven (7) criteria listed on the required form. Students should refer directly to the Institutional Review Board (IRB) website for regulations, processes and to determine which one of the two required forms is appropriate.
Form Approval and Processing
Many forms are required in route to graduation. Before most forms are submitted they must be approved and signed by the student's advisor, and by the Department Graduate Director or Chairperson (or the Unit Director), and turned in to room 1204 in the Benjamin Building for the approval and signature of the Dean of the College of Education. The College of Education, Office of Student Services, Graduate Studies serves as the Deans signature authority and provides documentation to the Graduate School that each graduating student has met all graduation requirements. The Graduate School is the official clearance office and must receive forms in support of graduation from the College of Education.
The College of Education, Student Services, Graduate Studies Office maintains a database of all students pursuing a graduate level degree in the College. This database is used to track the progress of each student toward graduation. It is therefore imperative that all forms in support of graduation are submitted to the Graduate Studies Office for the Dean's signature, and for data entry.
Advisor Versus Student Responsibilities
It is the student's responsibility to meet University, Graduate School, College, and Department requirements. Be sure to keep in contact with your advisor. Your advisor will inform you of the departmental requirements and course requirements. It is your responsibility to find out what you need to do or what forms you need to submit in order to graduate. Although your advisor may guide you in the processes toward graduation, it is not your advisor's responsibility to tell you what forms are required, when to file them, or to fill-out any forms for you.
If the form you need to submit is due by a certain deadline, please allow extra time to acquire all the necessary signatures in order to meet that deadline. All forms are available for pick-up in room 1204 Benjamin Building. Be sure to check out the site that will provide on-line forms in a printable format as well as an explanation of how the forms are used.

Graduation Audit--a good idea!
As a service to students in the College of Education, the Graduate Studies Office can provide you with a personal "Graduation Audit" upon your request. This checklist provides the items that need to be completed and submitted in order to obtain graduation clearance by the COLLEGE. The audit will indicate which forms have already been recorded for you and which ones are still outstanding. The audit will also give you further requirements that are needed for clearance by the GRADUATE SCHOOL and will provide you with the administrative processes and College requirements you must meet for graduation. DEPARTMENTAL requirements must also be met and should be obtained by contacting your advisor or departmental office. In order to assist you in this process, you may request that the Student Services Office provide you with a personalized Graduation AUDIT and a copy of the "Important Dates" (Deadlines).
To e-mail questions or to request a personal Graduation Audit, click here. Be sure to include an address if you want your audit mailed to you. If you would like to pick up your audit from room 1204 Benjamin Building, please provide the date on which you will stop by.
