About the College of Education

The College of Education at the University of Maryland ranks among the top 25 colleges of education according to U.S. News & World Report. College programs prepare educators, counselors, psychologists, administrators, researchers and educational specialists. Graduates work with individuals from infancy through adulthood in schools, community agencies, colleges and universities. Educational programs are accredited and approved by the following: National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education, Maryland State Department of Education, American Psychological Association, Council on Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Professions and Council on Rehabilitation Education. Focus of the College of Education

A primary focus of the College of Education is on graduate education and research. Goals for the graduate professional degree programs are to prepare nationally recognized scholars and policy makers; to develop students with exceptional research competencies; and to prepare students to assume leadership roles in their professions. The College offers an array of graduate areas across six departments leading to the Doctor of Philosophy, Doctor of Education, the Master of Arts, and the Master of Education degrees. Some Departments offer the Advanced Graduate Specialist (AGS) certificate program.

Programs of Study

Counseling and Personnel Services (EDCP) offers graduate degrees designed to provide the knowledge and skills needed for practice and research in counseling and related human services professions. These fields are concerned with helping people (individually, as well as in groups, schools and organizations) to attain their optimal level of personal, social, educational and career functioning.

Masters specialty areas are College Student Personnel, Rehabilitation Counseling, and School Counseling. An advanced graduate specialist (AGS) certificate is offered in Rehabilitation Counseling. A combined MA/AGS program is offered in School Psychology. Doctoral level specialty areas include College Student Personnel Administration, Counselor Education, Counseling Psychology, and School Psychology.

Curriculum and Instruction (EDCI) offers a variety of specialty areas designed to meet graduate students' personal and professional goals which may include educational research, teaching, supervising, providing leadership as curriculum specialists within the disciplines, teacher education, or consulting at all levels of instruction: elementary, secondary, and higher education.

The Department operates three centers, which support graduate studies and research: the Center for Mathematics Education, the Reading Center, and the Science Teaching Center. Areas of specialty include: *Art, Elementary, English, Foreign Language, Mathematics, **Music (doctoral only), Teacher Education and Professional Development, Reading, Science, Social Studies, Speech and Theatre, and TESOL. The Department also offers a master's degree combined with ***initial teacher certification. The Maryland Master's Certification Program (MMCP) in elementary and some secondary areas is a full-time, one-year program that begins in the summer. The Creative Initiatives in Teacher Education (CITE) two-year program in elementary education is a collaborative effort between Montgomery County Public Schools and the University of Maryland, College Park.
*Applications are not currently being accepted to the Art Education program.

Educational Leadership, Higher Education and International Education (EDHI) This department is part of the outcome from the College’s recent reorganization of the Department of Education Policy and Leadership into two new departments. The Department of Education Leadership, Higher Education and International Education prepares students for leadership positions as scholars, researchers and administrators in higher education, international agencies, and organizational leadership. It offers three areas of specialization: organizational leadership and policy studies, higher education and international education. Education Policy Studies (EDPS) This department is part of the outcome from the College’s recent reorganization of the Department of Education Policy and Leadership into two new departments. The Department of Education Policy Studies concentrates on the preparation of scholars and researchers capable of applying the disciplines of economics, history, philosophy, political science, anthropology, sociology, and cultural studies to the study of education policy and practice. It includes three areas of specialization: curriculum theory and development, socio-cultural foundations of education and policy studies. Human Development/Institute for Child Study (EDHD) offers graduate degrees designed to develop competencies in the scientific knowledge of human development and learning across the life span. The degrees provide students with an interdisciplinary approach to human development, and prepare students for careers in research, teaching, and the application of knowledge in human development and learning in different settings.

Masters degrees are offered in Human Development and a concentration in Early Childhood. The Ed.D. and Ph.D. degrees offered are in Human Development, with areas of concentration in Social Development, Cognitive Development, and Physiological Development. There are also two specialty areas at the doctoral level. The Educational Psychology specialty focuses on research-based training in the application of psychological theory and research methods to educational issues. The Developmental Sciences specialty is jointly administered with the Department of Psychology and focuses on research training linking the psychophysiological, social, emotional, and cognitive aspects of development across the life span.

The Department operates the Center for Young Children in support of graduate studies and research, and houses the Center for Children, Relationships, and Culture, a research center devoted to these topics.

Measurement, Statistics, and Evaluation (EDMS) offers graduate degrees at the masters (M.A.) and doctoral (Ph.D.) levels oriented toward the specialty areas of Program Evaluation, Measurement, and Statistics. Considerable flexibility is maintained in the areas of study through the selection of optional coursework and the opportunity for a wide variety of practical experiences. Ample opportunity exists to engage in research with faculty and to present research results through appropriate professional outlets.

Faculty in EDMS have expertise in such areas as computer-based testing, design of experiments, construction and evaluation of measuring instruments, generalizability theory, measurement theory, multidimensional scaling, multivariate analysis, program evaluation, latent class analysis, structured equations modeling, and research methodology.

Special Education (EDSP) prepares professionals who will work directly or indirectly with individuals who have disabilities. Special education graduate degrees prepare teachers, research specialists, and/or leadership personnel for schools, institutions of higher education, and related agencies, offering graduate degrees of high quality which fulfill priority needs at the local, state, regional, and national level.

Graduate degrees at the masters and doctoral level are offered with specialty areas in Teacher Preparation, Behavior Disorders, Infancy and Early Childhood, Learning Disabilities, Policy Studies, Secondary and Transition, and Severe Disabilities.
