Dear Parent/Guardian:

I was pleased to have the opportunity to talk to you about plans to begin a new transitioning program on the campus of Frostburg State University (FSU). As I explained, we are currently continuing the work required to get the program established. The program will actually begin on January 5, 1998.

Even though the program will be based on the campus of FSU, _____________________

will still be enrolled as a student in the public school system and parental rights and responsibilities regarding special education services will remain the same. Transportation to and from the program will be provided by the Allegany County Public School System as necessary.

If____________________ would decide to try the new program and not be satisfied, he/she would be allowed to return to his/her current high school program if you want to continue your child’s educational services until 21 years of age.

At this point I have visited the high school program where _________________________

is enrolled. I have observed the class, talked to the teacher, looked at records and talked to _____________________________.

Soon you will be receiving an application form for the program. If you are interested in the new program, you will need to complete the application form. You will be contacted at a later date to arrange a meeting.

The meeting will give you a chance to see where the program is located and ask any questions you might have. At this meeting you will be able to share your concerns and help develop goals. ____________________, of course, will also participate to help decide what is most important and appropriate for his/her education and transition planning.

The program is optional and not mandatory but provides an opportunity for the continued development of practical academic and life skills in an age appropriate setting with the hope for employment within the community as a result.

If you have any questions, please contact me at 301-759-2065.

Sincerely,

Steve Shumaker
