JOB DESCRIPTION

 

The function of a job coach is to represent the Post- Secondary Program at Carroll Community College in providing on-the-job support for its students who are either competitively employed or volunteering services in the community.

 

The coaching position encompasses areas of job training, skill and socialization development and liaison between employer, student, and educational staff. In the multifaceted and constantly changing environment of the job coach, strong personal attributes of creativity, problem solving, communication, and thorough observation skills are highly desirable. Disability awareness and experience in working with individuals with special needs are very helpful.

 

The job coach will utilize observational record-keeping and the writing of short narratives of daily student contacts. The techniques of modeling, shadowing, and fading will be employed by the coach with the student. Often, the employer will desire to confer with the job coach about the student employee and will seek advice on reasonable accommodations for the student in the workplace. Consequently, the job coach will need to distinguish between routine decision-making on the student’s behalf and situational job-site decisions which need to be referred to the Post-Secondary Coordinator.

 

It will be the job coach’s goal to establish firm work skills and appropriate behavior by the student within the scope desired by the employer. Along with other support personnel, the job coach will help to create a workplace climate of inclusion, respect, and acceptance of the student, which will lead to job permanence.
