COLLEGE PARK, MD (August 2009) – Former dean of the College of Education, Robert Carbone, sadly passed away on July 29, 2009, just two days after celebrating his 80th birthday.

Carbone joined the University of Maryland in 1970 when he was appointed dean of the College–a position he held until 1973. He remained at the College as a professor of Higher and Adult Education in the then Department of Education Policy, Planning, and Administration. He served as acting chair of the department from 1990-92. In 1993, he was named a professor emeritus upon his retirement.

Among his many accomplishments, Carbone was president of the American Association of University Professors, UM College Park Chapter (1977-79) and also the Maryland Association for Higher Education (1982-93).

He leaves to mourn his wife of over 40 years, Suzanne Carbone, and their two children. The funeral service is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Sunday, August 9, at the University of Maryland Memorial Chapel. A reception at the Samuel Riggs IV Alumni Center will follow.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to charities/associations dedicated to Alzheimer's disease.

The College of Education is thankful to Professor Emeritus Carbone for his many years of dedicated service and extends its heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.
