COLLEGE PARK, MD (April 2007) – College of Education alumna, Marsha A. Guenzler-Stevens, Ph.D., has been named the 2007 recipient of the William L. Thomas, Jr. Mentor Award.

Guenzler-Stevens currently serves as Director of Activities and Associate Director of the Stamp Student Union, Campus Programs and Multicultural Involvement and Community Advocacy at the University of Maryland—a position she has held since 1992. She received her doctoral degree from Maryland in Higher Education Administration, Policy, and Planning and is also an affiliate faculty member of the College Student Personnel (CSP) graduate program.

During her tenure at Maryland, Guenzler-Stevens has mentored countless graduate and undergraduate students. In 1995 she was named one of the university’s “Women of Influence” and in 2004 was awarded the staff award for Extraordinary Public Service to the University and Greater Community by the University System of Maryland Board of Regents. She continues to be active in national professional associations, having recently served as the Program Chair for the 2007 ACPA/NASPA Joint Meeting in Orlando.

Established in 2003 by the CSP graduate program in the Department of Counseling and Personnel Services, the William L. Thomas Jr. Mentor Award is presented to outstanding members of the profession to honor their excellence in mentoring between higher education professionals and graduate college student personnel students.

The award is named in tribute to William L. “Bud” Thomas, Jr., who served the University of Maryland as vice president for Student Affairs for over 25 years until his retirement in 2001. He also served the students of the CSP graduate program as a professor in the doctoral capstone seminar for as many years. Thomas was committed to the development of new professionals. He mentored scores of doctoral students and supported the teaching and mentoring work of other Maryland student affairs professionals who serve as faculty in the CSP program as well as graduate assistantship supervisors. The CSP program values the learning that is fostered for students in partnership with their assistantship supervisors, internship sponsors, and many others in their graduate education experience. They honor Thomas’ commitment to mentoring with this award.
