Curriculum and Instruction Professor, Rebecca L. Oxford,
named University Distinguished Scholar-Teacher for 2006-07
COLLEGE PARK, MD (January 2006) - Rebecca L. Oxford, Ph.D., a professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, has been selected as one of six faculty as a recipient of the 2006-07 University of Maryland Distinguished Scholar-Teacher Award. Oxford will be recognized during the 23rd Annual Faculty and Staff Convocation that will be held during fall semester 2006.
"This is a great honor for me, my department, and the College of Education," said Oxford, who describes herself as passionate about working with students and colleagues on issues of linguistic and cultural diversity, literacy, teacher education, and technology. "My ultimate goal is to transform education in ways that can bring everyone closer to equity, justice, and peace. The Distinguished Scholar-Teacher Award strengthens my commitment."
College of Education Dean, Edna Mora Szymanski, commented on Oxford's selection as a Distinguished Scholar-Teacher for 2006-07. "Dr. Oxford's commitment to her field is worthy of this recognition," Szymanski said. "The Distinguished Scholar-Teacher honor is one that is bestowed on the best of the best.We are pleased that she was chosen and join with the University of Maryland community in offering our congratulations."
Sponsored by the Office of Faculty Affairs, the Distinguished Scholar-Teacher Award recognizes senior faculty for outstanding scholarly accomplishment combined with excellence in teaching. The award carries an honorarium of $5,000 to support the Distinguished Scholar-Teacher's professional activities. The honorees participate in programs for faculty or students to share their expertise in establishing productive research programs and developing successful teaching methods and approaches. Recipients also present a lecture during the university's Distinguished Scholar-Teacher Lecture Series.
Oxford is the latest addition to the impressive roster of College of Education faculty who are past recipients of this prestigious award.

Rebecca L. Oxford is the Senior Unit Leader for Second Language Education and Culture in the College of Education's Department of Curriculum and Instruction. A respected scholar and author, Oxford has published numerous books about language learning motivation, learning strategies, and instructional methods, in addition to spearheading two editions of a popular textbook series for university-level English language learners. Oxford is currently involved in a study of technology in teacher education. In addition, she is coordinating a cross-cultural team to conduct research on technology-enhanced reading for the International Children's Digital Library, which is headquartered at the University of Maryland. Oxford has received various honors in recognition of her work, including the recent University of Maryland Award for Innovation in Teaching with Technology, which she shared with her doctoral student and co-teacher, Yesim Yilmazel-Sahin. She was also presented with the international Lifetime Achievement Award for her work in the field of teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL), and the Curriculum and Instruction Graduate Student Association's Outstanding Mentor Award.
