Educational Technology Outreach (ETO) program hosts Fourth Annual "C3" Conference Oct. 6-8

Cyberethics, Cybersafety and Cybersecurity to be discussed during
conference sponsored by College of Education

COLLEGE PARK, MD (Sept. 6, 2005)-Developed for educators to learn effective ways to safely use technology in the classroom, the Educational Technology Outreach (ETO) program in the College of Education is hosting its annual conference Oct. 6-8, 2005. Titled: "C3-Cyberethics, Cybersafety, and Cybersecurity-Implications for the Professional Community," the three-day conference in designed to address a gap in the field of cybersecurity with professional development opportunities for educators and technology coordinators.

With support from the National Cyber Security Alliance, who designated October National Cyber Security Awareness Month, the ETO has expanded its reach, realizing the regional and national need for professional cybersecurity training. Through a National Science Foundation CyberWATCH grant, pre-conference workshops will be held for the first-time on Oct. 6 to examine and discuss the role of the IT professional and educational technology coordinators in cybersecurity.

Jeff Greenspan, President of Database and LAN Solutions, will deliver the keynote address: "Understanding and Addressing the Current Threats to an Organization from Internet Access." Other featured sessions include speakers from Homeland Security, Federal Trade Commission, Business Software Alliance, ProjectNethics, iSAFE, CoSN, NetsSmartz and MDTAP.

Topics to be explored during the conference include property rights and copyright issues, plagiarism and electronic cheating; effective cybersecurity practices, curriculum resources, technology education for students with disabilities, viruses, hoaxes and backing up systems, anti-virus protections, spam control and curriculum and tools for security training and awareness.

"With the constant evolving of new worms and viruses, and the expansion of laws on copyright infringement and file-sharing, this conference can be very useful for all educators who want to keep up with the latest information," said Davina Pruitt-Mentle, ETO director.

The registration fee is $75. The conference sessions will be held at the Samuel Riggs Alumni Center at the University of Maryland. Registration is being handled on-line at: www.edtechoutreach.umd.edu. For more information, contact Davina Pruitt-Mentle by email: dpruitt@umd.edu or by telephone, 301.405.8202.
