Dr. Martin L. Johnson honored as a
‘Campus Model of Excellence’
as part of OMSE celebration of Black History Month

COLLEGE PARK, MD (February 2005) – College of Education Associate Dean Martin L. Johnson has been recognized as a campus model of excellence by the Office of Multi-Ethnic Student Education (OMSE)–a unit of the Academic Affairs Division of the University of Maryland.

Johnson’s many valuable contributions to campus were showcased at a reception held by the OMSE on Feb. 23 at the Hornbake Library in celebration of Black History Month. The theme for the event was, "Black History: Celebrating Campus Models of Excellence."

Johnson has been a member of the College of Education faculty since 1972. He is associate dean for urban and minority education and director of the Maryland Institute for Minority Achievement and Urban Education. He is also a professor of mathematics education in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction–a department he chaired from 1994 to 2001.

Johnson’s research interests include mathematics learning in minority and young children. He has authored and edited numerous articles and books on mathematics curriculum, including such publications as the college level mathematics methods book, Guiding Each Child’s Learning of Mathematics: A Diagnostic Approach to Instruction (with Robert Ashlock, John Wilson, Wilmer Jones); K-8 elementary school mathematics textbooks, Mathematics In Action; "How Primary Children Think and Learn" (with Patricia Campbell in I. M. Carl [Ed.], Seventy-five Years of Progress: Prospects for School Mathematics); and Changing the Faces of Mathematics: Perspectives on African Americans (with Marylyn Strutchens and William Tate [Eds.]).

Johnson has also been the recipient of various prestigious awards, including the Distinguished Minority Faculty Award from the University of Maryland, Maryland Mathematics Educator of the Year, as well as the Award of Excellence Award from the Black Faculty and Staff Association at the University of Maryland, College Park.

The College of Education congratulates Johnson on this most recent honor and proudly joins in celebrating his outstanding service as a model of excellence.
