DEPARTMENT OF CURRICLUM AND INSTRUCTION ART EDUCTION PROGRAM OFFERS OPPORTUNITY FOR STUDY IN ITALY

Three-week long program to be offered in January 2005

COLLEGE PARK, MD (September 2004) — History and the arts come alive in this three-week, art program in Italy offered in January 2005 as part of the art education program in the University of Maryland Department of Curriculum and Instruction.

The art education faculty director, Julianne Ferris, will guide the instructional program and will accompany the group to Italy.

During the first week, students attend three-hour classes for five days at the University of Maryland College Park. Students will complete a variety of assignments and projects in art studio, art history, art criticism, and aesthetics, and develop an art portfolio. Following that, students depart for two weeks in Italy, exploring the world’s great art centers, Florence and Rome, with day trips to Pisa and Naples/Pompeii. The group will meet each evening to discuss our experiences, create journal entries, and complete related art exercises and projects.

This course is open to all students and may be used to satisfy an art elective requirement such as EDCI 301 or a general elective by registering for EDCI 489, section 2401. The program fee of $1,950 includes three credits of tuition, lodging and breakfasts. Students are responsible for remaining meals, miscellaneous expenses, and airfare to and from Italy.

The application deadline is Oct.1, 2004. For more information on the program, contact Ferris via email at: jferris@umd.edu
