College of Education plans events as part of the April 24 Maryland Day celebration

Come celebrate Maryland Day 2004 with your family and friends on April 24 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The College of Education participates in the annual university "open house" by hosting a series of events promoting learning, exploration, and community-building.

The college hosts a number of events for children in the Benjamin Building including face painting, a puppet show, knowledge games, sand art, storytelling, simulation games, creating cards for kids at the Children’s National Medical Center, and more. The Center for Young Children will host an Early Childhood Festival and an Alumni Reception at their center.

Information about the college and its programs will be offered at various tables in the College of Education Tent on McKeldin Mall. Visitors can explore career options in education, get help finding funds to pursue a teaching career, meet the college dean, associate deans and department chairs, and connect with members of the College of Education alumni chapter board of directors. The Maryland Literacy Research Center will also present information on their work.

Events and Activities for Children and Adults at the Benjamin Building

10 a.m. to 3 p.m. - Get Your Face Painted Just for Fun! 1315 Benjamin. What a better way to celebrate the day than with a Terrapin, flower, or animal painted on your face. 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. - Create Cards for Kids! 1121 Benjamin. Kappa Delta Pi, the education honorary, invites children to create cards of cheer for kids at the Children's National Medical Center in Washington, D.C. 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. - Enjoy a Puppet Show! — 1107 Benjamin. The Mary McLeod Bethune Society will be presenting a multicultural puppet show at 10:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Sponsor: College of Education. Contact: Derek Furukawa, 405.2364

10 a.m. to 1 p.m. - Explore How Education and Technology Connect. - 0230 Benjamin. Come and learn about the connection between education and technology through an array of interactive demos and hands-on activities. Try your hand at programming simulations in the Robo Lab. 1 to 3 p.m. - I Wrote A Story, Would You Like To Hear It? - 1121 Benjamin. Gather around the Bladensburg High School students as they read aloud special stories they have written for young listeners. 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. - Find Funds to Pursue a Teaching Career! Learn about scholarship and financial aid opportunities available to prospective teachers, with emphasis on programs within the College of Education. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. - Thinking about Becoming a Teacher? Explore the undergraduate/graduate teacher education programs in the College of Education. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. - Maryland Literacy Research Center. View various samples of literacy research from faculty members of the Maryland Literacy Research Center, or take a mini-lesson to see how hands-on science observation of owl pellets and literacy can be merged.
