College of Education and College Senate to Honor
Six Faculty and Staff at First Annual
Awards Ceremony May 14

COLLEGE PARK, MD (APRIL 28, 2004) - The University of Maryland's College of Education will honor six of its faculty and staff with awards for teaching, scholarship, leadership and service during its First Annual Awards Ceremony on May 14. The ceremony opens with a college-wide celebration brunch at 10 a.m., with the awards ceremony following at 11 a.m. in 0220 Benjamin. The 2003-04 honorees:

The six honorees were chosen by unanimous vote of the College of Education Awards Committee, according to William G. Holliday, chair of the College Senate. The committee, chaired by Jing Lin, Department of Education Policy and Leadership, established the awards program, determined the criteria, and accepted nominations and supporting materials. (See awards criteria below)

"We expect this college-wide awards ceremony to be the first in a tradition we will establish to formally recognize the outstanding contributions of our faculty and staff," said Edna Mora Szymanski, Dean of the College. "We are a top-ranked College of Education because we have a dedicated faculty and talented professional staff that serve our students, our college, and the university community. I congratulate the recipients and look forward to this well-deserved recognition ceremony."

COLLEGE OF EDUCATION AWARDS CRITERIA:

Criteria for excellence in teaching are based on:

    • Student evaluation of teaching (quantitative and/or qualitative);
    • Chairing or mentoring students who have successfully attained undergraduate or advanced degrees;
    • Innovative methodology, e.g., application of technology to learning, distance education, attention to (a)ffective domain, cooperative learning;
    • Peer review of teaching;
    • Creation of teaching materials (syllabus, computer, overhead, novel approaches);
    • Other quality indicators of outstanding teaching.

COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP AWARD (over about three years time span)

Criteria for outstanding scholarship are based on:

    • Publications in prestigious, refereed journals;
    • Publication of books with prestigious publishers;
    • Significant research grant funding;
    • Presentations at major conventions or meeting;
    • Chapters in books.

COLLEGE SERVICE AWARD

Criteria for outstanding service are based on:

    • Outstanding service provided to K-12 or to local, state, federal, and/or international agencies;
    • Service to the university community;
    • Service to professional associations.

COLLEGE STAFF AWARD — FOR EXEMPT STAFF

There is no time limit with respect to employment in the College;

All nominations should describe with examples the nominee’s qualification for the award; letters of support from other people who know the nominee(s) and are familiar with their work should be submitted as part of the nomination.

Criteria:

    • Exceptional contributions to work within the College;
    • Demonstrated exceptional leadership in managing staff and/or resources;
    • Individual performance must have exceeded job requirements;
    • Outstanding personal qualities:

--Positive rapport with all levels of staff, both within and outside the College;

--Demonstrates initiative;

--Exemplary attitude;

--Integrity and other commendable traits.

 

 

COLLEGE STAFF AWARD — FOR NON-EXEMPT STAFF

There is no time limit with respect to employment in the College;

All nominations should describe with examples the nominee’s qualification for the award; letters of support from other people who know the nominee(s) and are familiar with their work should be submitted as part of the nomination.

Criteria:

    • Exceptional contributions to work within the College;
    • Demonstrated exceptional leadership in managing staff and/or resources;
    • Individual performance must have exceeded job requirements;
    • Outstanding personal qualities:

--Positive rapport with all levels of staff, both within and outside the College;

--Demonstrates initiative;

--Exemplary attitude;

--Integrity and other commendable traits.

COLLEGE LEADERSHIP AWARD

The nominee should be a current member of the College of Education faculty. The recipient of this award will be a member of the community with an exemplary record of sustained and acknowledged contribution to the quality of life in the College. The candidate’s accomplishments should be distinguished by a dedication to the fulfillment of the College’s goals and mission, such as; supporting, refining, and/or extending the programmatic structures of the College; professional accomplishments that contribute to the direction and climate of the College; and /or by university service that fosters closer connections between the College and the larger university.
