Outstanding Alumni to be Honored at Nov. 19 Awards Ceremony

Five Honorees to be Recognized along with Terp Teacher of the Year

(COLLEGE PARK, MD. — October 2002) -- As part of American Education Week events on Nov. 18-19, 2002, the College of Education and its Alumni Chapter Board of the Directors, and Kappa Delta Pi will host a dinner and ceremony to recognize five distinguished alumni for their achievements in the field of education, and recognize the 2002-03 Terp Teacher of the Year.

The college’s ceremony, "Celebrating Education: A Tribute to Teaching and Learning," will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 19 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the University of Maryland Golf Course Club House. Keynote speaker for the evening is Donna Wiseman, Associate Dean for Teacher Education at the College of Education.

The awards ceremony is part of several activities planned for the college’s annual recognition of American Education Week. Other activities include an evening of Professional Update Seminars on Monday, Nov. 18, and a presentation by author Jan Pottker, one of the alumni award recipients, on Nov. 19.

The president of the College of Education Alumni Chapter, Jean Mullan ’68, and Dean of the College, Edna Mora Szymanski, will join Kappa Delta Pi to present awards to the following honorees:

Outstanding Leader in Education

Carl E. Anderson, Ed.D., `69, Higher Education

Anderson is also the College of Education’s Distinguished Alumnus of the Year and will be honored in April 2003 at the University of Maryland Alumni Association Awards Gala.

Outstanding Scholar in Education

James P. Barufaldi, Ph.D., `72, Science Education

Outstanding Professional in Education

J. Edward Andrews, M.A., ’61 and Ed.D.,`68, Higher Education

Outstanding Professional in Education

Ronald A. Peiffer, M.A., ’71 and Ed.D., `88, Curriculum and Instruction

Alumni Entrepreneur of the Year (Inaugural award)

Jan P. Pottker, Ph.D.(M.A. `71), Elementary Education

Terp Teacher of the Year

Michele A. Zurad, M.Ed. `88, Curriculum and Instruction

About the recipients:

Carl Anderson
Carl Anderson

Carl Anderson is the recipient of the Outstanding Leader in Education Award for 2002. He will also be the 2003 recipient of the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the College of Education, which will be awarded next April by the University of Maryland Alumni Association.

Before his recent retirement, Anderson served on the Professional Staff of the Post Office and Civil Service Committee for the U.S. House of Representatives. Prior to that appointment, he spent 32 years at Howard University, serving as Director of Student Activities, Associate Dean of Students for Administration and Student Life, Lecturer, Dean of Students, and Vice-President for Student Affairs.

He is the recipient of several significant honors and awards for his work, such as the National Leadership Award in Education for the Decade (presented by the King Holiday Committee), a Ford Foundation Grant for Doctoral Research, and the Nelson Mandela Award for Leadership in Higher Education. In addition, he is a member of many important professional associations, such as the American Association of University Administrators (for which he is a founding member and has served on the Board of Directors), the American College Personnel Association (for which he has served on the Executive Council), and the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (for which he has served on the Executive Council).

In addition to professional involvement, Anderson is active in many civic and community organizations, such as the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the National Urban League, the President’s Committee on Employment of the Handicapped, and the D.C. Board of Education’s, Advisory Committee for Alternative Schools and Programs and Advisory Commission on Educational Law Revision. He is a member of the board of directors for the College of Education Alumni Society. He earned his B.A. and an M.S. from Southern Illinois University, and an Ed.D. in higher education administration from the University of Maryland.

James P. Barufaldi
James P. Barufaldi

James P. Barufaldi is the recipient of the Outstanding Scholar in Education Award for 2002. He is a professor of science education at the University of Texas, Austin, and director of its Science Education Center. He has executed and reported large volumes of research on how to increase science learning among K-12 students and research-based instructional strategies shown helpful to science teachers.

He has held leadership position in the National Association for Research in Science Teaching (president and board member), the Association for the Education of Teachers in Science (president), and the National Science Teachers Association (board member). He has also devoted an exceptional amount of time and energy in communicating the results of research to science teachers throughout American and his home state, Texas. His research has informed science teachers’ practices in a variety of classroom settings, especially urban schools in Texas.

Barufaldi has published more than 60 articles, books, chapters, and book reviews and has presented more than 300 workshops, papers and seminars throughout the world. He received a bachelor’s degree in biological science from Marietta College, a master’s degree in biology education from Kent State University, and a Ph.D. from the University of Maryland.


J. Edward Andrews is the recipient of the Outstanding Professional in Education Award for 2002. He is a visiting professor in the Department of Education Policy and Leadership at the University of Maryland. He joined the department following a distinguished career as education leader serving several school districts and cities. Andrews began his education career as a high-school English and Social Studies teacher in the Montgomery County Public School district, moving from teaching into administration. He became Superintendent of Schools in 1980, serving in that capacity for three years. From 1989 to 1991 he accepted an appointment as an advisor to the superintendent of the Baltimore City Public Schools, and served as a deputy superintendent. He was a member of the Maryland State Board of Education from 1992-2000 and served as its vice-president for three terms. He also served in numerous high-profile assignments pertaining to public education in Maryland, including two gubernatorial commissions. He was president of the Council of Administrative and Supervisory Organizations of Maryland (CEASOM) in 1987-1988. Andrews holds both a M.A. and Ed.D. from the University of Maryland.

Ronald Pfiefer
Ronald Pfiefer

Ronald Pfiefer is the recipient of the Outstanding Professional in Education Award for 2002. He is an Assistant State Superintendent of Schools for the Maryland State Department of Education. He has directed policy development and communications for the state superintendent over the past decade – a period during which Maryland developed and implemented one of the strongest, long-running school reform programs in the nation. An educator for more than three decades, he began his career as a teacher at the middle school and high school levels, and then went on to be an administrator in Anne Arundel County schools, working on curriculum issues and serving as a liaison to the State Department of Education. He joined the Maryland State Department of Education in 1987 and is head of the Office of School and Community Outreach where he oversees an extensive outreach effort that reaches educators, parents, the business community, and the public. He holds a doctorate in curriculum and instruction from the University of Maryland, a master’s degree in educational supervision and human relations from The George Washington University, and a bachelor’s degree in secondary education from Shippensburg University in Pennsylvania.





Jan Pottker
Jan Pottker

Jan Pottker has been awarded the Alumni Entrepreneur of the Year Award for 2002. This is the first time this award has been bestowed by the College of Education. A writer and public speaker, she is the recent author of Janet and Jackie: The Story of A Mother and Her Daughter, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis (St. Martin’s Press). This biography of Janet (Mrs. Hugh D.) Lee Auchincloss is the first written about the mother of the former First Lady. In all, she has published seven books, and is working on another due for publication in 2003.

Pottker has lectured to hundreds of audiences, ranging from retirement groups to professional associations to women’s clubs. She has recently presented lectures for the Smithsonian Institution and the Corcoran Gallery of Art. She also leads a walking tour of Celebrity Georgetown that takes her guests to the houses of the rich and famous in Washington, D.C.’s most celebrated neighborhood. She has also worked for nearly 25 ears as an analyst for the Office for Civil Rights, (OCR) U.S. Department of Education. OCR is a regulatory agency that enforces anti-discrimination laws for students on the bases of race, skin color, ethnicity, sex, disability, and age. She also analyzes data, assists in developing policy, and writes many of OCR’s publications.

Pottker earned her M.A. in elementary education from the college in 1971. She also earned a M.Ph. and a Ph.D. in sociology and education from Columbia University, and holds a B.A. from American University. Her first two books were published by academic presses.

Michele A. Zurad
Michele A. Zurad

Michele A. Zurad is the 2002-03 Terp Teacher of the Year. She earned her M.Ed. degree in curriculoum and instruction 1988 from the College of Education. A sixth grade mathematics teacher at Burleigh Manor Middle School, she has been a teacher for 20 years. She was also a nominee for the Maryland State Department of Education Teacher of the Year recognition program.
