| Mobile Devices as Clickers |
|
As part of the Office of Information Technology's Mobility Project, it's now possible to use certain mobile phones or PDAs as 'clickers,' rather than having to buy a separate device.
For those less familiar, clickers are small, handheld, wireless devices that allow students to actively participate in instructor-led class activities, such as anonymous voting, surveys and group quizzes. To participate, students needed to already own such a device, unless the instructor had made other arrangements. Typically clickers run between $28 and $40, although there are some more expensive models.
Now, for a comparable but slightly lower price range, students can purchase an annual or four-year license for software that allows any mobile device they own that has a Web browser (e.g., iPhone, BlackBerry, laptop) to emulate the functions of a clicker. Note that usage is dependent on a number of factors, including instructor agreement, mobile-device compatibility, and network access.
