Retired RJ Reynolds executive William VanArnam (Social Studies/Education, B.S., '62) recently donated $50,000 in support of the College's Maryland Institute for Minority Achievement and Urban Education.
 
Alumni Awards and Recognitions:
Carol Pica
Carol Pica (Administration, M.Ed., '82; Elementary Education, B.S. '75) received a Distinguished Educational Leadership Award from The Washington Post in recognition of her 12 years of outstanding service as principal of Marlton Elementary School in Upper Marlboro, Md.

Nominated by her school community, Pica is a veteran educator with 32 years experience in Prince George's County Public Schools.

Marsha Guenzler-Stevens
Marsha Guenzler-Stevens (Higher Education Administration, Policy, and Planning, Ph.D., '93) was honored as the 2009 Woman of the Year by the UM President's Commission on Women's Issues.

Guenzler-Stevens is the director of activities and associate director of the Adele H. Stamp Student Union Center for Campus Life. She is also an affiliate faculty member of the College Student Personnel (CSP) program. She has spent all of her professional career working in the field of higher education in admissions, residential life, campus activities, Greek life, student unions and leadership development. Outside of the university, she consults in areas of organizational development, motivation and management training. She also speaks nationally on such topics as student leadership development, human dignity and women's leadership.

Alumni Board member Geordie Paulus (Curriculum and Instruction; M.Ed., '03), was named the Maryland Outstanding Technology Leader in Education. Paulus is the Technology Support Teacher at Elkridge Landing Middle School in Howard County, Md.

Scholarships:
Heather See (Human Development, Ph.D., '08) and John Rios (Elementary Education; B.S., May '09) were honored this month at the campus' National Scholarships Reception in recognition of their selection as Fulbright Fellows.

See will be conducting research for a year on early childhood education in Spain, which recently funded a large federal initiative on early education. Fluent in Spanish, she lived and taught in Spain while an undergraduate. Rios will be going to Korea next year for his research.
