This semester the colloquia will focus on, Impacting Teacher Performance and Student Acheivement through Incentive Plans. Featured speakers for Session II are Audrey Davis, Director of Organizational Effectiveness, Prince George's County Public Schools and Segun Eubanks, Director of Teacher Quality, National Education Association. Hybrid learning is growing rapidly in today's educational world. When designed effectively, hybrid courses can reducing the time spent in the classroom, enhance active learning and improve learning outcomes by combining the engaging benefits of traditional instructor led training with the advantages brought by a variety of online technologies. Professors Kathryn Alvestad and Brett Kent (Chemical and Life Sciences) will discuss their experiences with teaching hybrid and distance learning courses and explore the advantages and challenges. No registration is required. Light refreshments will be provided.

CoE Graduate Student Research Conference
The College of Education will hold its annual Graduate Research Conference (GRS), Linking Education Theory and Practice, on May 1, 2009. All graduate students are urged to submit a proposal on research projects they have completed, are conducting at the present time, or propose to undertake. The program will include paper, poster, and roundtable presentations, as well as a panel presentation related to research. Submit your proposal online by March 13, 2009. Registration info. will be sent at a later date.

Gender, Science and the Legalization of Forced Human Sterilization

The campus community is invited to the 2009 colloquium of the CEPAL Annual Series, Diversity and Community in American Life. Professor of Law Paul A. Lombardo, Georgia State University, will discuss the 'The Case of Buck v. Bell'. Lombardo's new book, Three Generations, No Imbeciles: Eugenics, the Supreme Court and Buck v. Bell tells the story of Carrie Buck and her family who were condemned in an infamous Court opinion written by Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes that declared, "Three generations of imbeciles are enough." A book signing will follow the colloquium discussion.

The Challenges of Studying Quality in Teaching

Panelists Linda Valli, Marilyn Chambliss, Anna Graeber and Bob Croninger will address some of the challenges with studying quality in teaching, including representing the multiple understandings of teaching; preserving the complexity of teaching as professional practice; synthesizing findings across multiple methodologies and analytic approaches; and conducting research that is useful to, but not controlled by, policymakers and practitioners. The speakers will draw on their High-Quality Teaching Study which examined what teachers do to help upper-grade elementary students in relatively high-poverty schools acquire foundational skills in mathematics and reading.

Would a program that paid students to perform in school be effective in increasing student achievement? For the final colloquium of the Maryland Institute for Minority Achievement and Urban Education's spring 2009 series, Evan Smith, Director of the D.C. Capital Gains Program will share the District's Progress with K-12 Students. The Capital Gains program provides monetary incentives to students in the district for high attendance and performance in school. Before the current recession even began, a major revolution had begun in who faculty are, how they are appointed, and the environment in which they work. Dr. Gary Rhoades, Secretary of the American Association for University Professors (AAUP), and a professor and scholar on trends and change in the academic profession review what is most at risk with regards to faculty. The discussion will cover tenure, balance of work and family, as well as new appointments and their impact on student learning and shared governance. Assoc. Professor Kerry Ann OMeara (Higher Education) will also provide info. on her summer course on the Academic Profession which will offer opportunities to work on a research project for the AAUP. This year students' presentations will focus on applying research in the classroom with the goal of 'Building a Collaborative Research Community'. The event it open to the public. Rhee will deliver her address at noon (attendees are asked to be seated by 11:45 a.m.; pre-registration guarantees priority seating). The day concludes with a town hall discussion with Dean Donna Wiseman, beginning at 4:30 p.m.
