Pay-for-Performance Teacher Incentive Plans: Conceptualization and Practice
Maryland Institute for Minority Achievement and Urban Education
4:30 to 6:30 p.m.
Room 3221, Art/Sociology Building

This is the first session of the spring 2009 colloquium series hosted by the College of Education's Maryland Institute for Minority Achievement and Urban Education (MIMAUE). This semester discussions will focus on Impacting Teacher Performance and Student Achievement through Incentive Plans.

The panelists for Session I are Clara Floyd (President, Maryland State Teachers Association), Jennifer King Rice (Associate Professor, Education Policy Studies), and Betty Malen (Professor, Education Policy Studies). They will speak about the issue of reward systems for teachers, with particular attention on Prince George's County FIRST program--a pilot pay-for-performance incentive plan designed to provide teacher incentives based on student achievement.

According to the founding director of MIMAUE, Professor Emeritus Martin L. Johnson, "This colloquium series will allow participants to place 'pay-for-performance' in the context of other reform efforts, to understand the many dimensions of this incentive structure, and to learn of national and local efforts to implement this structure with teachers AND students."
