Overview of Masters Program

Two post certification* master’s programs in mathematics education are available at the University of Maryland, the Master of Education (M.Ed.) and the Master of Arts (M.A.) programs. Both are 30 semester-hour programs, and both provide considerable flexibility in planning a specific sequence of experiences for a student.

M.Ed. in Mathematics Education

Students interested in teaching in K-12 classrooms or working in a school or district leadership position typically pursue a Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Mathematics Education. This degree is offered through the M.Ed. Teacher Leadership program in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, and offers both Elementary/Middle School (Mathematics Focus) and Secondary Mathematics Education options. Candidates for the M.Ed. programs in mathematics education at the University of Maryland are elementary or special education teachers or teachers of mathematics at the middle/intermediate/junior high or high school level, or those interested in teaching in higher education. Most degree recipients use their special interest and competence in mathematics education by serving as a mathematics specialist for a teaching team or as a subject specialist in other settings. Other graduates are mathematics curriculum specialists who serve in supervisory roles or who assist classroom teachers as resource persons. Some have gone on to work for the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), for state or federal agencies, or work in private tutoring or consulting positions. The M.Ed. culminates in a portfolio and an action research paper.
