Mathematics Education Courses Primarily for Doctoral
Level Students
EDCI 751 FOUNDATIONS OF MATHEMATICS EDUCATION I: THEORY AND RESEARCH
ON MATHEMATICAL THINKING AND LEARNING (3)
Prerequisite: Admission to an EDCI
Doctoral Program in Mathematics Education or permission of the department.
Study of mathematical thinking by students at various levels of schooling
considered from classic and contemporary theories of learning that are
particularly relevant to the study of mathematics. Exploration of what
it means to understand mathematics. (Every other Fall Semester, evening)
EDCI 752 FOUNDATIONS OF MATHEMATICS EDUCATION II: THEORY AND RESEARCH
ON MATHEMATICS TEACHING (3)
Prerequisite: EDCI 751 or permission of the department.
Knowledge of and insights into how mathematics has been and is being taught;
theories about how it might be taught. Familiarity with the methods used
to do research on teaching and to improve teaching. (Every other Spring
Semester, evening)
EDCI 753 FOUNDATIONS OF MATHEMATICS EDUCATION III: CURRICULUM (3)
Prerequisite: Admission to an EDCI Doctoral
Program in Mathematics Education or permission of the department. The
study of curriculum in mathematics and research on curriculum. The relationship
of mathematics and school mathematics; the forms, purposes, development,
and evaluation of mathematics curricula. (Every other Fall Semester, evening)
EDCI 754 FOUNDATIONS OF MATHEMATICS EDUCATION IV: POLICY, AND
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT IN MATHEMATICS REFORM (3) Prerequisite:
EDCI 752 or EDCI 753 or permission of the department. Preservice
teacher education, professional development, and policy as agents of reform
in mathematics education. (Every other Spring Semester, evening)
