What We Do
How Do Doctoral Students Develop the Knowledge, Skills, and Dispositions Required by Work in Mathematics Education?
Doctoral programs at universities in the Mid-Atlantic Center for Mathematics Teaching and Learning provide formal coursework and informal experiences designed to develop mathematics educators with knowledge, competence, and disposition for dealing with three central tasks in mathematics education:
- Formulating Learning Goals based on a deep understanding of mathematics and of how such understanding develops;
- Designing Curricula and Learning Environments that are increasingly effective for facilitating development of deep mathematical understanding;
- Creating Contexts that support effective learning environments.
Students learn how to contribute productively to these tasks through study in required mathematics and mathematics education courses and from participation in a variety of research, curriculum development, and teacher education projects.
