Profile Between 1992 and 1997, Dr. Guthrie served as the
Co-Director of the National Reading Research Center which conducted
studies of reading, writing, science and history learning assessment, and
professional development. Prior
to this position, Dr. Guthrie headed the University of Maryland’s Center
for Educational Research and Development and was formerly the Director of
Research for the International Reading Association (1974-1984). He
received his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois in Educational
Psychology. In 1992, the
National Reading Conference awarded him the Oscar Causey award for
outstanding contributions to reading research.
He is a Fellow in the American Psychological Association, American
Psychological Society, the National Council of Research in English, and
was elected to the Reading Hall of Fame in 1994.
Dr. Guthrie's interests are literacy development and environments
