Jean Mullan, President
B.S. '68 - Elementary Education
Prior to moving to White Plains, N.Y. Jean taught in Prince George's County at Cherry Lane Elementary School. In New York, she earned post-graduate credits while teaching second, third and fourth grades. She retired from teaching to raise a family, but has stayed active in education through volunteer work. Jean now lives in the area and is a longtime friend and supporter of the University of Maryland.
Carl E. Anderson, Vice-President
Ed.D. '69 - Education
Carl earned his Ed.D. in Counseling and Personnel Services. He worked at Howard University for 32 years, serving as vice president of student affairs. After retiring from Howard, he served for four years on the Professional Staff of the Post Office and Civil Service Committee for the U.S. House of Representatives. He is now retired.
Robert Ramin, Treasurer
M.A. '92 - Education
Bob earned his undergraduate degree and MBA from Cornell. He earned credits toward his Ph.D. in education and would like to continue his studies at Maryland. A former director of annual programs at the University of Maryland, Bob is currently executive director of the National Aquarium in Washington, D.C.
Jennifer Jarosinski, Secretary
B.S. '01 - Elementary Education
Jennifer is an honors graduate of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. As a student, she worked for Advocates for Children in the "I Love to Read Program." Jennifer now teaches seventh-grade science at Forest Oak Middle School in Gaithersburg, Md.
Mary Batcher
Ph.D. '86 - Statistics
Mary is a principal at Ernst & Young LLP, where she leads the statistics practice. She began her career with the federal government in 1985 at the Department of Education's National Center for Education Statistics where she developed the first early estimates of public elementary and secondary enrollment and staffing measures. Mary is an elected Fellow of the American Statistical Association (ASA), the current chair of the ASA Council of Chapters, and a past president of both the Washington Statistical Society and the Caucus for Women in Statistics. She has also been an adjunct professor of statistics at The George Washington University.
James "Jim" DeGeorge
M.S. '71 - Comparative Educational Studies; B.S. '68 - Social Studies Education
Jim is a faculty associate at the Johns Hopkins University as well as the Professional Development School Coordinator for the Department of Curriculum and Instruction in the College of Education, University of Maryland. He is president of the Howard County Retired Teachers Association, an educational consultant to the U.S. and Maryland State Department of Education, plus a motivational speaker at local, state, and national conferences. Jim retired from the Howard County Public Schools System where he served as a vice principal from 1980 to 1986, and a principal from 1986 to 1999.
Jacqueline L. Frierson
B.A. '71 - Secondary Education History
Jacqueline has worked in three different school systems, including Baltimore City for 27 years, Baltimore County for one year and East New York (Brooklyn) for one and a half years. She has had extensive teaching and supervisory experience (K-12) with gifted and talented students, special education students, regular education students and inclusion classes. After 20 years Jacqueline became department leader at Lemmel Middle School and later assistant principal at Dunbar High School and Randallstown High School. She also attended the Principal's Institute at Harvard University. Currently Jacqueline is the Program Director of the Resident Teacher Certification Program
Stephen Hagenbuch
M.A. '75 Educational Administration
Steve started his career in education teaching sixth grade in the Harford County Public Schools System. After seven years teaching in various grade levels he became an assistant-principal and in 1986 became a principal. Steve is currently an elementary principal in the South Eastern School District in York County, Pennsylvania. Active in the Maryland Association of Elementary School Principals, he was Maryland's National Representative to the National Association of Elementary School Principals and served on several national committees. He is also a former president of the Council of Educational Administrative and Supervisory Organizations of Maryland. An active Terp supporter, Steve has been a Terrapin Club member for nearly 20 years and regularly attends football and basketball games.
Catherine M. Kern
B.S. '00 - Elementary Education
Catherine is an honors graduate of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. She is presently teaching at Broad Acres Elementary in Silver Spring, Md., and has plans to attend graduate school.
Jody K. Olsen
Ph.D. '79 - Human Development
Jody is deputy director of the Peace Corps, a position she was nominated for by President George W. Bush. She has significant experience with the U.S. Peace Corps as Chief of Staff, and as Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific. Before accepting this position, Jody served as a senior vice president at the Academy for Educational Development in Washington, D.C. She was also the founder of the Center on Aging at the University of Maryland. Jody earned her Ph. D. in gerontology and education administration from the University of Maryland and is past president of the University of Maryland Alumni Association.
Holly Ponzillo
B.S. '02 - Mathematics and Math Education
Holly is currently pursuing a master degree in liberal arts from the Johns Hopkins University while working as a math teacher at Hereford High School in the Baltimore County Public Schools System. She was founding president of the University of Maryland Honors Program, and a member of the Omicron Delta Kappa Honors Society, National Society of Collegiate Scholars, Golden Key Honor Society, and Kappa Delta Pi. She was also listed in Who's Who Among College Students.
Donna Redmond-Jones
Ph.D. '04 Curriculum and Instruction
Donna taught English and Journalism in the Henrico County Public Schools in Richmond, Va. from 1995 to 1998. While earning her graduate degree, she worked as an instructor and research assistant at College of Education, University of Maryland. By 2004, she was appointed Assistant Principal of the Winston Churchill High School in Montgomery County. Donna is a published author and has been recognized with such honors as Distinguished Teaching Assistant and the Sally Mae First Class Teacher Award.
Darla Fishbein Strouse
Ed.D. '04 Education Policy and Leadership; B.S. '67 Counseling and Personnel
As executive director of the Office of Partnerships and Resource Development at the Maryland State Department of Education, Darla has created and implemented numerous state and regional corporate partnerships, as well as government and community collaboratives that support prestigious education recognition programs in Maryland. She developed Maryland's first workplace literacy initiative, the Labor Education Achievement Program (LEAP)—a partnership between the Maryland State Department of Education and the Metropolitan Baltimore AFL/CIO. She also created and directs Maryland's Teacher of the Year program and was regional vice president of the National Association of Partners in Education. Darla is a speaker and presenter at state and national conventions and has authored a number of publications and software programs in education, literacy, and safety.
Antoinette "Toni" S. Ungaretti
Ph.D. '92 - Human Development
Toni is currently employed by Johns Hopkins University, School of Professional Studies, where she serves as the Assistant Dean and Director of the Division of Undergraduate Studies. She oversees undergraduate programs in Interdisciplinary Studies, Information systems, and Business and Management; noncredit programs; and graduate certificate programs in adult learning, higher education, and medical education. She also teaches fellows in general pediatrics in the School of Medicine. Previously she designed and coordinated the M.A.T. Program and established the Department of Teacher Development and Leadership. In addition she is co-owner of Raven Technologies and principal in Tide Point Data Center located in Baltimore. Toni has served as the president or executive officer of several state, regional, and national organizations in education and business. She is also a national consultant on early childhood professional development. In 2003, she was named one of Maryland's Top 100 Women by Warfield's Daily Record.
Jane West
Ph.D. '88 - Special Education
Jane is a principal in Washington Partners, serving as an expert in special education and disability policy. She is a board member of the Committee for Education Funding and co-chair of the Education Task Force of the Consortium of Citizens with Disabilities. Jane also chairs the Partnership Development Board of the Disability Rights Education and Defense Fund, and serves on the Mitsubishi Electric American Advisory Board.
Michele A. Zurad
M.Ed. '88 - Curriculum and Instruction
In 2002 Michele was honored as Terp Teacher of the Year, Howard County Teacher of the Year, and was one of seven finalists for the Maryland State Department of Education Teacher of the Year recognition program. She began her career teaching in an open classroom at Lucy Barnsley Elementary School in Montgomery County. During the last 18 years in Howard County, she has been part of the opening staff of two new schools, served on the administrative councils at each school, and co-developed a pilot program for the National Board Certification Program. While classroom teaching is her primary focus, Zurad has been committed to mentoring new teachers and supervising student teachers from a number of Maryland institutions. She has been a guest speaker in graduate level courses for future teachers and administrators for both the University of Maryland and Johns Hopkins University.
