Two Undergraduate Options for Chinese Language Teacher Certification

1. Four-Year Double Major in Chinese and Secondary Foreign Language Education with Certification

receive a degree in Chinese Language and certification to teach Chinese

option consists of:

Chinese Language courses 57 credits
Education courses (includes student teaching) 34 credits
CORE General Education courses 31 credits
UNIV 101 (required for AHRU students) 2 credits
Total
124 credits


Entry Requirements:
• 45 credits, with a 2.5 GPA and one semester at UMCP
• Completion of freshman English Composition and math with a “C” or better
• Completion of Praxis I with passing scores on each section
• Prior experience working with children/youth in Chinese language and/or culture
• Goal statement
• Three letters of recommendation
• special note: students must take the ACTFL Chinese Mandarin Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) and the Chinese Language Chinese Mandarin Written Proficiency Test (WPT) and qualify at the Intermediate/High Level

2. Five-Year Integrated Master’s Degree (B.A. + M.Ed. in five years) with Certification

receive a B.A. in Chinese and M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction


Option Consists of:

Chinese Language courses 57 credits
Education courses 12 credits
CORE General Education courses 31 credits
UNIV 101 2 credits
Elective courses 18 credits
Total at Bachelor’s level
120 credits
Total at Master’s in Curriculum and Instruction
30 credits

Entry Requirements:


• preliminary admission same as above, with additional requirement of indicating interest in Five-Year Integrated Program (IMCP)
• in junior year, apply to IMCP by December 1
• must have GPA of 3.0 or higher
• submit updated goal statement and letters of recommendation
• before receiving degree, must have completed required education courses and
- maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher
- must take the ACTFL Chinese Mandarin Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) and the Chinese Language Chinese Mandarin Written Proficiency Test (WPT) and qualify at the Intermediate/High Level
