Admissions Overview

Univ of Maryland Campus Students

The newly formed Department of Teaching and Learning, Policy and Leadership (TLPL) is the merger of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, the Department of Education Policy Studies and the program in Organizational Leadership and Policy Studies. Like the variety of concentrations within the department, the applicants to TLPL programs also vary in terms of their backgrounds, experiences, goals, and aspirations (among a number of other characteristics). The application process is an applicantís opportunity to highlight what their unique story can contribute to the Department and what he/she might, in turn, receive as a student at UMD. The section below offers a road map of general steps in the application process to assist prospective applicants with the application process.

  • When approaching the application process, prospective applicants will first want to determine to which type of degree (and program or specialization within that degree) they would like to apply. TLPL offers M.A., M.Ed., M.Ed. with teacher certification, M.Ed. with reading specialist certification, and Ph.D. degrees. Not all specializations are offered with each degree. Please see Academic Programs for a more detailed description of the various TLPL graduate programs. All applicants will be required to select their specific program of choice within the online application.

  • Once a prospective applicant finds a program to which they would like to apply, he/she should check the baseline criteria for admission for the master's or doctoral. While the department considers a full range of application components, admission to the graduate school is dependent upon minimum GPA and GRE (for M.A. and Ph.D. applicants) scores. When aware of the admissions criteria, applicants might want to view the full array of admissions components and plan ahead to complete the components in a timely manner. The writing sample and statement of purpose, in particular, may require additional time from an applicant.

  • Check the TLPL APPLICATION DEADLINES. Master's and Doctoral programs vary in their application timelines. For example, TLPL only admits doctoral students in the fall semesters. Applicants to the Maryland Masterís Certification Program (MCERT) or Integrated Masterís Certification Program (IMCP) please download the MCERT Admissions Handbook for deadlines and admissions criteria. NOTE: The deadlines are the dates by which the department needs to have all application materials. To ensure that applications are considered for admission, applicants will want to allow ample time complete their application packet--including letters of recommendation and standardized exams.

  • Information about current TUITION AND FEES can be found on Office of the Bursar website. The application process addresses financial aid only briefly, asking applicants to mark whether or not financial aid is necessary. Please note that more detailed information about processes related to TLPL Financial Assistance can be found here. Information about general financial aid can be found at the Office of Student Financial Aid.

  • International Applicants - In addition to sending the materials required by the Graduate School and the Department of Teaching and Learning, Policy and Leadership, international applicants are required to submit additional documents such as Transcript translation, English Language Proficiency scores (e.g. TOEFL), Certificate of Finances, and visa status. Please visit the International Graduate Admissions webpage for more details.
