Admissions Criteria

Doctoral Degree Applicants


To be considered for admission to the Department of Teaching and Learning, Policy and Leadership at the University of Maryland, each applicant must submit an application and supplemental materials directly to the Graduate School.

The Department of Teaching and Learning, Policy and Leadership (TLPL) applies the following criteria to evaluate and recommend applicants for full admission to a doctoral program:

Grade Point Average (GPA): A minimum undergraduate grade point average of 3.0 is required. A minimum graduate grade point average of 3.5 is required for doctoral programs.

Official GRE (Graduate Record Examination) General Test scores:  Applicants are required to submit scores in the 50th percentile or higher. Scores may not be older than 5 years.

In addition, admissions decisions also weigh letters of recommendation, statement of purpose, and writing samples submitted by applicants.

International Applicants - In addition to sending the materials required by the Graduate School and the Department of Teaching and Learning, Policy and Leadership, international applicants are required to submit additional documents such as Transcript translation, English Language Proficiency scores (e.g. TOEFL), Certificate of Finances, and visa status.
