Praxis II: Frequently Asked Questions
For Prospective Special Educators Seeking Maryland State Certification

Which Praxis tests do I need to take to obtain Maryland teacher certification?

You must take Praxis I (taken for admission to teacher education) and Praxis II.

Which Praxis II tests do I need to take?

Test Code 0352: Special Education: Application of Core Principles across Categories
(1 hour) AND
Test Code 0353: Education of Exceptional Students: Core Content Knowledge (1 hour)

What are the passing scores?

MD State Department of Education requires a composite score of 295 across both tests.

How do I register for the tests?

Register online at http://www.ets.org/praxis/.

How can I prepare for the tests?

Review Tests at a Glance, available online at http://www.ets.org/praxis/. This free guide explains each test and includes sample test questions. Questions are in a multiple-choice format and may ask you to apply what you know to sample case studies. Some students find it helpful to buy a preparation book, available at large bookstores.

The tests cover basic principles of special education for examinees intending to teach in preschool through grade 12. Extensive knowledge of specialty areas, such as hearing impairments or visual disabilities, is not required. For students in our five-year program, tests primarily tap material covered in 210 (Introduction to Special Education) and the “third year” of the program.

When should I take Praxis II?

You must PASS Praxis before student teaching. This means that you should take the Special Education tests at least a full semester before you plan to student teach. We recommend that our 5-year-program students take the test in the summer following the third year of the program. This will ensure that the material tested is fresh in your mind and will provide you with plenty of time to retest if necessary.

Which Praxis II tests do I need to take to obtain “Highly Qualified” status under No Child Left Behind?

While the “Highly Qualified” designation is not required for initial licensure, you will want to obtain this status as soon as possible. MSDE allows teachers to earn this designation through either passing additional Praxis II tests (see chart below) or by following a rubric called HOUSSE. You may view the HOUSSE requirements at: http://www.marylandpublicschools.org/NR/rdonlyres/FCB60C1D-6CC2-4270-BDAA-153D67247324/5317/HOUSSEInstructionsRevMarch2005_Final.pdf .
