M.Ed. Curriculum Theory and Development
With a Concentration in Jewish Studies





Program Overview


This M.Ed. program is offered jointly with The Joseph and Rebecca Meyerhoff Center for Jewish Studies. It is designed to meet the needs of professionals working in the field of Jewish education who wish to earn a competitive Masters of Education while at the same time pursuing graduate level Judaic Studies at the premiere Jewish Studies program of the Greater Washington Area.

Students take a total of 36 credits towards the Masters of Education Degree. The Education component consists of a Specialization Core in Curriculum Theory and Development and a course in research methods, as well as supervised field work and a Masters Seminar.

The Jewish Studies component consists of five courses (15 credits). These courses include nine credits of Jewish Studies electives and six Jewish Studies credits to fulfill the Education requirement of courses addressing epistemological or philosophical problems.

  • EDPL 738 Scholarly Thought and Contemporary Curriculum
  • EDPL 837 Seminar in Curriculum Theory and Development

Research Methods:
  • EDMS 645 Quantitative Analysis (or equivalent)
  • EDPL 700 Qualitative Research Methods (or equivalent)
6 Credits

Field Experience:
  • EDPL 489 Field Experience in Education
3 Credits

Seminar Paper:

Jewish Studies Component


Courses are offered as sections of JWST 719 Readings in Jewish Studies.

Supporting Courses:
Students are required to take 6 credits focusing upon foundational epistemological or philosophical perspectives. These may include:
  • Contemporary Problems in Jewish Law and Practice
  • Philosophical Problems in Judaism

  • Texts and Literature:
    • Interpreting the Hebrew Bible: Ancient and Modern Models
    • Classical Texts of the Jewish Tradition
    • History of the Jewish Liturgy
  • History:
    • Bible and History: Israelite Historiography from a Comparative Perspective
    • History and Sociology of Contemporary Jewish Communities
    • Rabbinic Thought 1100-1600
    • Halakhah and Social History in the Middle Ages and Early Modern Period.
    • Modernizing of the Jews
    • Religious Change in Modern Jewish Life
    • History of Jewish Women
