Step 1 - Select a Program
Select the program and specialization area you would like to apply to.

Step 2 - Complete the Online Application
All students must apply directly to the University of Maryland Graduate School. Start by filling out the online application . When completing your online application, all your application materials must have the correct Major/Program and Program Code as follows: Select Education Leadership, Higher Education and International Education - EDHI.

The non-refundable application fee is $60.00. If you choose not to process your fee payment online via the on-line application you may send it to the Enrollment Services Office using the Credit Card/International Check form. Choosing not to use the online payment process may extend the processing time for your application.

Note:
This step should be completed prior to submitting any supplemental materials to the
University for your application. Once the application is complete, you can then modify your application and upload additional materials through the electronic APRA system.

Step 3 - Receive an Email Confirmation from the Graduate School
Upon completion of the online application, you will receive a confirmation email from the Graduate School.

Step 4 - Supplemental Application Materials
Send in your supplemental materials after completing the online application. Submitting as many of these materials online as possible will help to expedite your application and avoid delays in processing.

Supplemental Materials Include:

  • Official Transcripts
  • Proof of Maryland Residency (if appropriate)
  • Letters of Recommendation
  • Statement of Goals, Experiences and Research Interests
  • Standardized Test Scores
  • Writing sample (All doctoral applicants; Master's applicants to the Higher Education and International Education specializations)

Step 5: Ensure a Completed Application,  Including Supplemental Materials by the Program Deadlines
Make sure that all of your application materials have been submitted prior to the program deadlines:

  • M.A., Ph.D. Higher Education:
Fall Intake only -- Final deadline January 9
  • M.A., Ph.D. Organizational Leadership & Policy Studies:
Fall Intake only -- Final deadline February 28
  • M.A., Ph.D. International Education Policy:
Fall intake only-- Final deadline March 31
  • Ed.D. Organizational Leadership & Policy Studies:
The Ed.D. with superintendent certification is only admitting new students in pre-arranged cohort groups. The general Ed.D. is currently being revised and will not be admitting new students until further notice.

Note: Applications are not reviewed until they are complete. The deadlines refer to complete application packets. Since it takes time to compile the various components of an application package,it is to the student's advantage to apply well before the published deadline. This is especially true if the applicant intends to be considered for a fellowship, assistantship, or other form of financial aid.

Note for International Students: International students are encouraged to apply as early as possible to avoid processing delays. Please note the special deadlines and additional criteria for International Application (link to International Applicants Page).

Step 6: Look for Financial Support
All applicants will be automatically screened for merit-based fellowships. Check out the financial aid page for other opportunities for funding your graduate education at EDHI.
