Melanie Killen, Ph.D. (1985, Developmental Psychology, University of California, Berkeley). Dr. Killen is Professor of Human Development, Professor of Psychology (Affiliate), and the Associate Director for the Center for Children, Relationships, and Culture at the University of Maryland. She is the departmental Director of Graduate Studies, and the Director of the National Institutes of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) Training Program in Social Development. She has received funding from NICHD and NSF for her research. She received the Distinguished Scholar-Teacher Award by the Provost from the University of Maryland for 2008-2009.
Dr. Killen is Associate Editor of Child Development and serves on the Society for Research in Child Development Graduate Council. She has co-edited 6 books, including serving as the Editor of the Handbook on Moral Development (2006), which is being translated into Chinese and Korean, and she has published over 90 empirical journal articles and book chapters. Dr. Killen’s research interests are children’s and adolescents’ social and moral reasoning, peer relationships, inclusion and exclusion, intergroup relationships and attitudes, gender roles in the family, prejudice in childhood, media as intervention to promote social development as well as stereotypes in media images, and how diversity in social experiences is related to reasoning about exclusion and intergroup bias.
