Program
The program offers a 50-credit Master of Arts (M.A.) degree
or Master of Education (M.Ed.) degree. The M.A. is available
with a thesis or non-thesis option; the non-thesis option requires
an extensive seminar paper. The M.Ed. also requires a seminar
paper. Either degree may be completed on a full-or part-time
basis. Within the general rehabilitation counseling curriculum
there is an emphasis on the acquisition of the interpersonal
and professional skills necessary to be an effective
rehabilitation counselor. Students may also choose to
specialize in psychiatric rehabilitation by focusing on mental
health agency training placements, taking a psychiatric
elective, and writing a thesis or seminar paper on a topic related
to the rehabilitation of persons with chronic mental illness.
Students with a bachelor's degree in rehabilitation services
may develop an individualized program of study that meets
all requirements and builds upon previous knowledge of the
rehabilitation counseling field.
Students must complete a culminating examination for graduation.
Most students elect to complete the examination for a
Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC) during their last semester
prior to graduation (either Fall or Spring administration).
As this is a nationally administered examination, there
are additional costs associated with it. Deadline dates for registration
for the CRC exam are early (generally 4 months prior to taking
it) and strict. Please make sure you meet with your advisor
about this option well in advance.
The rehabilitation counseling program is fully accredited
by the Council on Rehabilitation Education (CORE). Students
are eligible to take the Certified Rehabilitation Counselor examination
after completing 75% of their coursework. The CRC is the preferred
professional entry-level certification in the field.
