  Doctoral Degree Requirements

The curriculum requirements are designed to ensure adequate preparation in the following areas of proficiency: (a) Psychological Foundations, (b) Assessment, (c) Consultation, (d) Direct Interventions, and (e) Research. In addition to the required courses listed below, students must complete 18 credits of graduate-level electives chosen with advisor approval. One of these electives must be in the area of special education. A total of 80 coursework credits are required with an additional 24-30 credits required for research and fieldwork/internship. Those entering the program with advanced degrees may have some requirements waived based on previous graduate work.

Sequencing of the curriculum assures that students are simultaneously engaged in work related to theory, research, and practice. Coursework involving practice through role-play or work with non-referred children begins in the student's first semester with a course on individual testing, and continues through the Fall and Spring semesters. By the second year, students are actively engaged in working with individual children and families, and in school-based consultation. All of these activities are conducted under close faculty supervision. Third-year students complete a ten-hour per week fieldwork experience congruent with their individual programs of study while continuing required and elective coursework, and frequently completing a thesis. During the fourth year students typically complete elective coursework and advanced research courses, and begin work on a dissertation
