Department of Counseling, Higher Education and Special Education Begins
As of July 1st the Counseling and Personnel Services Department (CAPS, EDCP) merged with two other departments (Education Leadership, Higher Education and International Education (EDHI) and Special Education (EDSP)) to form the new Department of Counseling, Higher Education, and Special Education. The graduate specialty areas that were included in the CAPS Department remain in place under the new Department. Masters degree specialty areas include: College Student Personnel, and School Counseling. Ph.D. specialty areas include: College Student Personnel Administration, Counseling Psychology (joint with the Psychology Department), Counselor Education, and School Psychology. You may continue to use this website to access information about these degree areas. A completely new website is being developed for the new Department. The link for this current website (www.education.umd.edu/edcp) will include an automatic forwarding to the new website once the new site is developed.

The EDCP program area, Ranked #1 by the U. S. News & World Report, welcomes all prospective students and visitors to our website. Our graduate program is composed of specialty areas that are at the forefront of their respective disciplines. The EDCP program consists of a diverse faculty and student population. Students receive an unparalleled education experience that emphasizes excellence in scholarship and professional practice within a diverse community.

Do you want to improve your expertise in assisting people with psychiatric disabilities in their vocational recovery? The Rehabilitation Counseling Program offers a Graduate Certificate in Professional Studies in Psychiatric Vocational Rehabilitation. A limited number of full tuition scholarships are available. Program starts each fall. Application deadline is June 29.

Professor Susan Komives Selected for University of Maryland System Board of Regents Award
Professor Susan Komives was selected as a recipient of the 2011 University of Maryland System (USM) Board of Regents' Faculty Award for Teaching.

The award is the highest honor the Board bestows to publicly recognize distinguished performance and faculty achievements. The awardees are selected by the Council of University System Faculty and submitted to the Board of Regents for approval. Each recipient will receive a plaque and monetary award.

The nominees in the teaching category demonstrated accomplishments in areas such as course development and pedagogy, faculty development, mentorship of faculty, direction of student research projects, and leadership in teaching improvement.

The CHSE Department now has an online system for evaluating EDCP, EDHI, and EDSP courses with fewer than 5 students. This service is now OPEN.
