Secondary Education
The Department of Curriculum
and Instruction (EDCI)
offers several programs for people interested in obtaining secondary
education teacher certification in the following subject areas: Art, English, Foreign Language (Chinese, French, German, Italian, Latin, Russian and Spanish), Mathematics, Science (Agricultural Education, Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, Physics), Social Studies (Geography, Government and Politics, History), and TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages). Some of the EDCI programs are designed
for students who are still exploring whether teaching is an appropriate
career path for them. Other programs are intended for people who
already have confirmed their choice to pursue a teaching career.
Certification Options :
Four-Year Double Major Program
Undergraduates who realize that teaching is their goal early may
pursue the four-year double major program. With this program, students
complete the content major (with additional coursework needed for
certification), and education courses, including the year-long internship.
Upon graduation students receive a double major (double degree if
fulfilled l50 credits) plus eligibility for certification from the
State of Maryland.
The Five-Year Integrated Master’s with Certification
Program
This program is intended for content majors (English, Foreign Language,
Math, Science and Social Studies) entering their junior and senior
year. The program is for talented students with a minimum GPA of
3.0 who wish to combine undergraduate studies in the content area
and professional education as a foundation for focused professional
coursework at the graduate level leading to secondary-level certification
in the subject field and the Master's of Education degree. As undergraduates,
admitted students complete their baccalaureate degrees with a major
in the relevant content area and a minimum of 12 credits in graduate
- level professional studies related to teacher certification requirements.
In their fifth year, they enroll in a full-year internship and complete
professional studies that make them eligible for teacher certification
and the master's of education degree. The Master's Program is housed
at the Shady Grove Campus.
The Masters Certification Program (MCERT)
MCERT(Maryland Graduate Certification Program) for Secondary Education (grades 7 through 12) is an alternative teacher education program for individuals who have completed a baccalaureate degree in various academic fields and are interested in teaching in a secondary school setting. The MCERT program is a 13-month, full time program that leads to a Master’s of Education (M.Ed) degree as well as eligibility for Maryland State certification to teach in secondary schools. The Post-Bac Certification only (PBC)
Program
Students may want to consider this option if they are not
interested in pursuing a master’s degree. Students must have
completion of a bachelor’s degree and appropriate coursework/relevant
studies or experiences to meet content area standards in an approved
secondary education content major. Students must have successful
completion of prerequisite professional courses or the capacity
to complete them prior to the main internship semester; passing
scores on Praxis I and Praxis II content exams; minimum 3.0 gpa
overall and in the content courses used to meet requirements for
the secondary education content major. Students need to apply as
Advanced Special Students.
