Graduate Studies in Reading Education
The Reading Education Specialization unit prepares students to become future leaders in reading education as reading specialists; university and college research and teaching faculty; administrators, advisors, and consultants to literacy programs at state, regional district, and school levels; literacy and educational policy makers; and developers of educational materials and curriculum. The master’s degree program in reading conforms with the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) certification requirements for K-12 and is approved by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). Students completing this program receive the M Ed degree and, with the successful completion of three years of classroom teaching experience, are eligible for certification from MSDE as reading specialists. The PhD and EdD doctoral programs in reading education are designed to prepare students for a variety of professional roles. Individual programs of study—with concentrations in research, teaching, and supervision of reading programs—are developed to meet the needs of each student.

The scholarly work and interests of the Reading Center Faculty are represented by six strands: research-based literacy instruction, family literacy, literature and exposition, diversity, literacy processes and strategies, and assessment. These strands demonstrate the faculty’s commitment to ensuring that all children have access to compassionate and competent reading teachers and become lifelong readers.
