Interns complete 12 credits in the intensive summer component aimed
at preparing them with a solid foundation for their full year internshi.
Summer course work includes:
In addition to internship credits, interns take 6-9 credits in supportive
course work during the fall and spring terms and 3 credits during
the final summer session to complete requirements for certification
and the master’s degree.
-
studies include a continuous strand of studies
in subject matter-based curriculum and pedagogy, an emphasis on
working with diverse learners, and a commitment to a class/practice-based
inquiry project.
Interns are assigned to a 2/3's time assignment in a
participating middle or secondary school for the entire school year
as the basis for their “field” experience.
Most graduate courses are offered at Shady Grove or on campus.
• All graduate interns are assigned apprentice
teaching duties in elementary schools in Montgomery County or Howard
County for 2 full days during the fall semester and for 16 weeks during
the spring semester. The full year internship, as required by the Maryland
State Department of Education, encompasses 100+ days of school-based
experience in a participating Professional Development School.
Support and Guidance within the Internship
• All graduate interns are assigned a school-based
mentor, an experienced certified teacher in the student’s area
of certification.
• In addition, all graduate interns receive support during the
school year from a university-based supervisor who is an experienced
educator in the field of elementary education.
· Whenever possible, graduate interns are placed in clusters
in a professional development school as part of building a peer-support
network in addition to the mentor and university supervisor.

These requirements are to be fulfilled prior to enrollment in the mathematics
methods course offered in these programs (EDCI 453 soon to become EDCI
652)
Math 212 - Elements of Numbers and Operations
Math 213 - Elements of Geometry and Measurements
Math 214 - Elements of Probability and Statistics

students.
• Graduate students will pay the $30 credit by exam fee for each
exam.
• Credits for the CBE will be posted onto the student's transcript.
• Students must arrange for CBE with the UM Mathematics Department,
well in advance of announced testing dates. Visit http://www.math.umd.edu/undergraduate/credit/creditbyexam.shtml
