Department of Curriculum and InstructionFax (301) 314-9055 Foreign Language EducationThe Foreign Language (FL) curriculum is designed for prospective foreign language teachers in middle through senior high schools who have been admitted to the EDCI Teacher Education Program. Currently, admission is open to qualified students seeking teacher certification in Spanish, French, Russian, and German only. A minimum of six hours of intermediate-level language course work in the student's major language must precede the required 300-400 level course work which includes the areas of grammar and composition, conversation, literature, civilization and culture, and linguistics. Students must also take a minimum of nine hours (three courses) of electives in a related area. Students are strongly advised to utilize these nine hours to begin or continue the study of another language as soon as possible after entering the unversity. The second area of concentration must be aproved by a FL advisor and may be in any foreign language regardless of whether it is a Maryland State Department of Education approved FL certification program.
