Introduction

This lesson was developed as a final instructional project for EDCI 385...computers for teachers.

This lesson is about the state of Maryland and the history behind its state symbols. It introduces students to several symbols of Maryland, and encourages them to think critically about the history of their state. Its intention is to provide students a creative way to learn social studies through the association of symbols.

Content Area and Grade Level

This lesson covers the content area of social studies. It also entails reading and writing skills. It is geared toward the third grade level, but can easily be modified to fit fourth, fifth, and sixth grades. It is also somewhat integrated within the disciplines of science, art and music.

NTEQ Lesson Plan Criteria

Objectives

1. Students will identify 10 state symbols.
2. Students will determine their significance.
3. Students will examine the history behind each symbol. They will achieve this objective by reviewing the WebQuest thoroughly. They will work both individually and in groups.
4. Students will research other state symbols and construct a database to organize, manipulate and paraphrase historical facts relating to various symbols.
5. Students will present the information found on their symbol and present it orally to the class.
6. Students will construct their own symbol and briefly describe in essay form its significance.

Matching Objectives to Computer Functions

Students will achieve these objectives by reviewing the WebQuest thoroughly. They will work both individually and in groups to research this information. I will provide internet links for them to review as well as books that will assist them. Within the WebQuest, students will be guided by the think sheet provided.

The Problem or Issue

I will provide 10 pages of information concerning different state symbols in web page form. Also included will be links to various sites explaining the significance of each symbol. The students will break into groups of two and study all symbols. They in turn will research the pages I have provided and create a chart of historical facts concerning the symbols in database form. Students may also use library resources. After researching and studying the WebQuest in its entirety, students will complete the think sheet. They will then research information on other assigned symbols. Students will complete all activities listed.

Information Manipulation

Students will develop a clear understanding behind the history of each symbol of Maryland. The think sheet provided will be used as a guide to understanding the material. They will also organize the information in a database. After completion of the WebQuest, students will report orally on the symbol on which they were assigned. They will then work individually to design their own symbol and explain its significance to them.

Results

Students will demonstrate their learning by preparing an oral presentation based on the research they found on Maryland state symbols. They will also demonstrate their comprehension of the importance of symbols in the activity that allows them the opportunity to design their own symbol. This exercise utilizes their individual creative thinking skills.

Activities while using the Computer

Students will go through the WebQuest examining different symbols. They will collect information from the links I provide them and they will also answer questions I pose for them in the form of a think sheet. They will also complete all activities provided throughout the WebQuest. These links can be found under the problem or issue segment of the teacher template.

Activities prior to using the Computer

Learners will need to be familiar with basic computer skills such as the use of the mouse in finding certain links. They must also know how to organize information and gather important data that is found at different sites. As a teacher I must know the information thoroughly before presenting it to the class. I must also have experience with WebQuests, links to outside information, matrix construction and databases.

Activities after using the Computer

After using the computer students will have constructed a database on their symbol. They will be able to explain the historical significance behind each symbol in an oral presentation. Students will also be constructing their own symbol and writing a short essay explaining its personal significance.

Support Activities

This WebQuest can be used to interpret other state symbols and can be used as a lesson across the country. It gives students historical information as to the significance of different symbols. Due to the fact that students will be constructing a database from the information they have researched, they could easily do this for other projects in the future. Students are also learning how to search the net for information. This skill allows for research in other content areas.

Possible Variations

Students could be assigned different states and their symbols across the country.

Theory
The theorist that inspired this WebQuest was Jean Piaget. Piaget felt very strongly about the hands on approach to learning. He felt this approach was a positive way to reach necessary critical thinking skills. WebQuest is an excellent example of this approach as it is abundant with hands on activities.

Conclusion

Students will not only learn about the history of their state, they will learn the interpretation of symbols. Additionally, they will gain the valuable skill of searching the internet and its vast array of resources. They will be encouraged to use critical thinking skills as they document the information they found. Students will also be encouraged to use creativity, a trait that is critical to development at this age level.
