For students who wish to pursue certification in special education and earn a master’s degree, we offer a 45-60 credit hour Master's of Education (M.Ed). Undergraduate work can be in any area. Students are required to take and pass the Praxis I at the Maryland State Department of Education requirement level as part of the application process. Students are then required to take and pass the Praxis II before student teaching. Students select an age range that leads to certification through the Maryland State Department of Education. The number of credits/coursework vary depending on previous coursework.

Early Childhood Special EducationThis program prepares individuals to become certified as early childhood special education teachers. This involves working with children with disabilities from birth through age 5, as well as with their families, in both school and community settings. For More information Contact: Program Coordinator: Dr. Deirdre Barnwell Faculty: Dr. Paula Beckman , Dr. Joan Lieber Elementary Special EducationThis program prepares individuals to become certified to teach students with disabilities in elementary schools. The focus is on teaching reading, math, and other content areas to students with diverse strengths and need and including students with disabilities in general education classroons. For More information Contact: Faculty: Dr. Deborah Speece , Dr. Rebecca Silverman Secondary/Middle Special EducationThis program prepares special education teachers to provide a range of services to secondary students. Instructional content and professional preparation are provided to enable graduates to work as middle or high school special education teachers, instructional support specialists, transition specialists, and advocates. This program is for those interested in becoming certified in early childhood special education and severe disabilities or Elementary special education and severe disabilities OR secondary/middle special education and severe disabilities.
