Early Childhood Special Education
The Department of Special Education at the University of Maryland
(UM) offers a Master’s Program in Early Childhood Special Education
to prepare individuals to work with children with disabilities from
birth through age 5, as well as with their families, in both school
and community settings.
This program is for those interested in becoming certified as an early
childhood special education teacher. In addition, for those already certified
in early childhood special education, you can earn a master’s degree
and advance your knowledge as a teacher, or as an advocate for families.
Depending on professional goals, entering students may select one of the
following Master's degree options:
The Specialty Program is
a 30 credit hour Masters of Education (MEd) program or a 36 credit hour
Master’s of Arts (MA) program designed for those already certified
in Special Education. The Specialty Program is also appropriate for those
who wish to obtain a master’s in special education without certification
to teach (e.g., advocate, allied professional, related service personnel,
adult service personnel). The student and advisor develop a plan of study
that complements previous background experiences and enhances career plans.
This program provides students an opportunity to develop competence in
a specific area of special education including: Students are required
to take the GRE when applying to this program.
