Master's Program: Severe Disabilites

The Department of Special Education at the University of Maryland (UMD) offers a Master's program to prepare special education teachers to provide a range of services to students with low incidence or severe disabilities such as autism, severe mental retardation, deaf-blindness, and / or multiple disabilities. At UMD, instructional content and professional preparation are provided to enable graduates to work as a teacher, educational team leader, and advocate.

Depending on professional goals, entering students may select one of the following Master's degree options:

red arrow The 36 credit hour Master's degree (M.A. or M.Ed.) program designed for those who are certified in special education and wish to specialize in severe disabilities and receive state certification in severe disabilities.
red arrow The dual certification program, 45-60 credit hours (depending on prior background), for students who are not certified in special education but wish to pursue dual special education and severe disabilities certification concurrently.

Financial Assistance

Tuition fellowships for 3 credits per session are available on a competitive basis to qualified part-time students. Awards are made semester-by-semester. Limited numbers of full-time graduate fellowships are also available on a competitive basis. These include tuition remission (up to 24 credits per academic year) and stipends requiring 8-10 hours of work per week related to individual academic programs.
