Departmental Advising
Upon admission to the Department, each student is assigned a faculty advisor. Faculty advisors assist students in developing an initial program of study, clarifying their career goals, and identifying courses and educational opportunities consistent with students' professional interests and the Department's mission. Whenever possible a student's first advisor will be a faculty member with expertise and scholarly interest consistent with a student's declared specialization.
As students progress in their studies, faculty advisors assist students in fine-tuning their program of study, developing their research interests, and fulfilling various degree requirements. Students may wish to retain the same faculty advisor throughout the program, or, either the student or faculty advisor may determine that a different advisor has expertise more closely aligned with a student's program of study. As students develop their program of study, they are encouraged to make use of the rich variety of resources within the university, the larger metropolitan community, and the numerous universities in the area that form the Washington Consortium.
