Graduate Teaching Group
Welcome to the Human Development Graduate Doctoral Student Teacher Web Page. The Department of Human Development is committed to providing support to our doctoral students as they become college instructors. We are pleased and excited to have been designated a model teacher mentoring program by the Center for Teaching Excellence on campus. This program also has received other awards and recognition from the University. Our program is dedicated to fostering professional growth by supporting graduate students in the role of college instructor.
The overall structure of the program is as follows. All students who are teaching for the first or second time in the department must enroll in EDHD 718, Apprenticeship in College Teaching, a one credit course designed to foster professional growth in the role of college instructor. Course requirements include attendance at monthly seminars, written and oral reflection of teaching practices and progress toward articulated teaching goals, analysis of mid-term and end of semester course evaluations, and participation in peer and faculty observations of the student's classroom teaching, which includes video-taping of the student's teaching and a follow-up consultation with faculty supervisor for the group. These activities are also designed to facilitate a seamless transition between the department's course-specific requirements and those necessary for the completion of the University Teaching and Learning Program certificate awarded by the Center for Teaching Excellence, a campus level recognition of excellence in teaching. Our group celebrates teaching as both scholarship and art, with emphasis on the unique strengths that each individual graduate student brings to the role.
