Colloquium Announcement: Beyond 'Beliefs': Identifying Learning Resources in Mathematics Teacher Communities

Despite the prevalence of policies aimed at and widespread images of individual teachers working to improve persistent problems of schooling, a preponderance of evidence shows that teacher communities matter most in overcoming systemic inequalities. How do we reconcile the intuitively powerful idea of individual teachers' beliefs shaping classroom practices with sociocultural perspectives that highlight the significance of teaching cultures? In this talk, I synthesize findings from studies I have worked on over the past decade that explore different facets of this question.

Promising Researcher Fellowship Competition: Student Announcement 2008-2009
The Department of Curriculum and Instruction offers -- for the academic year Fall 2008 through Spring 2009 -- a single, one-year Promising Researcher Fellowship for its advanced doctoral students, particularly those who aspire to tenure-track positions in major research universities. The fellowship will provide a total of $20,000 for the two academic semesters, consisting of a research assistantship of $15,000 (the only obligation being dissertation research and writing), plus an additional fellowship of $5000; in addition the award provides tuition remission of 10 credits (each semester) and health benefits. The application due on 4 pm on Monday March 31, 2008. (more info... )
