Early Career Award from AERACOLLEGE PARK, MD (February 2011) – One of the most prominent international professional organizations in the field of education will honor Assistant Professor Chauncey Monte-Sano in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. Dr. Monte-Sano has been named the recipient of the American Educational Research Association (AERA) Division K Early Career Award. Division K within AERA focuses on Teachers and Teacher Education. EDCI Associate Professor Patricia Campbell honored with Hay Award
The Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM) presented the Twenty-First Annual Louise Hay Award to Patricia Campbell, associate professor of mathematics education in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Maryland, at the Joint Mathematics Meetings in New Orleans, LA. Established in 1991, the Hay Award recognizes outstanding achievements in any area of mathematics education. Louise Hay was widely recognized for her contributions to mathematical logic, for her strong leadership as Head of the Department of Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science at the University of Illinois at Chicago, for her devotion to students, and for her lifelong commitment to nurturing the talent of young women and men. The annual presentation of this award is intended to highlight the importance of mathematics education and to evoke the memory of all that Hay exemplified as a teacher, scholar, administrator, and human being. Congratulations to Sherick Hughes (EDCI) on his selection as one of the recipients of the 2010-2011 CTE-Lilly Fellowships from the Center for Teaching Excellence and the Office of Undergraduate Studies. This honor is indicative of his commitment to teaching and leadership on campus. Involvement in the Lilly Fellows program provides an opportunity for personal growth and serves as a means to continue efforts to improve undergraduate education at the University
J. Randy McGinnis, Science Education, was elected as President-elect of the National Association for Research in Science Teaching (NARST). NARST is a worldwide organization of professionals committed to the improvement of science teaching and learning through research. Since its inception in 1928, NARST has promoted research in science education and the communication of knowledge generated by the research. The ultimate goal of NARST is to help all learners achieve science literacy. NARST promotes this goal by: 1) encouraging and supporting the application of diverse research methods and theoretical perspectives from multiple disciplines to the investigation of teaching and learning in science; 2) communicating science education research findings to researchers, practitioners, and policy makers; and 3) cooperating with other educational and scientific societies to influence educational policies.”
Jessica Bancroft earned the 2010 College of Education Outstanding Service Award for exempt staff. This award is given to a member of the College of Education’s staff who advances the mission of the College. Jessica was recognized for her exceptional performance as the Director of Undergraduate Advising and her positive rapport with other staff and faculty within the College, as well as her advocacy for students.
Kathleen Travers received the 2010 College of Education Excellence in Teaching Award for non-tenure faculty. This award is given to those who demonstrate exceptional commitment to undergraduate and graduate teaching, effective teaching methodologies, and exceptional support and mentoring of students.
John O'Flahavan was awarded the 2010 College of Education Distinguished Outreach Award. The Outreach Award is presented to faculty members who demonstrate outstanding service to schools, community organizations, community colleges, teacher and parent organizations and/or state education organizations. This outreach award recognizes the development of and involvement in intentional partnerships to improve the quality of education and access to education.
It has been announced by the University of Maryland that Dr. Victoria-María MacDonald has been awarded the 2010 Undergraduate Studies General Education/CORE Teaching Award.
The UGST GenEd/CORE Teaching Award honors a faculty member whose excellence in teaching a GenEd or CORE course has changed the lives of her/his students—changed or reinforced their career directions, made a difference in how they view the world, been there for them as a mentor or improved their understanding of challenging material.
Dr. Sherick Andre Hughes has been nominated to receive a 2010 Ethnic Minority Achievement Award!
PCEMI established the Ethnic Minority Achievement Awards to recognize faculty, staff, and students that have made outstanding contributions to the University’s diversity and equity efforts. The awards recognize those individuals and units that have worked to improve the racial climate on and outside of the College Park campus.
Dr. Peter Afflerbach has been elected to the International Reading Association's Reading Hall of Fame. The Reading Hall of Fame was established in 1973. Its purpose is to contribute, from the collective experiences of its members, to further improvement in reading instruction.
Congratulations to Jean Dreher for receiving the COE 2009 Distinquished TERP Award. This award is given to a tenure track faculty member who has provided exceptional service over a five-year period to their program, department, the College, and UMCP. This includes roles as program coordinator, interim department chair, chair of accreditation committees, leadership on senate, personnel, and academic curriculum committees, and strategic planning and organizational efforts. Rather than one single effort the recipient of this award is someone who has shown consistent service to the college and university in more than one way for more than one unit.
Congratulations to Lisa Bote for receiving her second College of Education Excellence in Teaching Award. Individuals who receive this award must have demonstrated exceptional commitment to and innovation in undergraduate and/or graduate teaching. Dr. Bote's passion for teaching inspires her students to be great, student-centered classroom teachers.
Student Awards Announced
Recent EDCI graduate, Rebecca A. Gibson, has been honored as a Finalist in the 2008 International Reading Association (IRA) Outstanding Dissertation Award competition for her dissertation, The Effects of Parent-led Read-alouds of Nonfiction Books on First-Graders’ Vocabulary Acquisition and Motivation to Read, completed under the direction of Dr. Mariam Jean Dreher. Becca will be presenting her work at the annual IRA convention in Atlanta.
A recent EDCI graduate, Lynn M. Newman, has also been honored as a Finalist in the 2008 International Reading Association (IRA) Outstanding Dissertation Award for the her dissertation, The Effects of Explicit Instruction of Expository Text Structure Incorporating Graphic Organizers on the Comprehension of Third-Grade Students, completed under the direction of Dr. Marilyn Chambliss. Lynn will be presenting her work at the annual IRA convention in Atlanta.
