The Graduate Second Language Education and Culture unit is comprised of two strands: Foreign Language Education (FLEd) and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). The M.Ed. with TESOL certification is designed for students from a variety of academic areas without prior teaching experience or certification who want to be certified in the State of Maryland. The M.Ed. with certification in foreign language education is intended for graduates with majors in the language who want to be certified in the State of Maryland. The Unit offers second language education specializations in the M.Ed. in Teacher Leadership in FLEd and TESOL, the former designed for students who have an undergraduate degree in and are already certified to teach a foreign language and the latter for candidates who are already certified in TESOL or who have appropriate backgrounds and experiences but not seeking separate TESOL certification. The goals of this academic degree level are to help students develop practical skills and the theoretical knowledge necessary for effective expertise in second-language teaching, learning, and assessment at all instructional levels. The program includes course work in current teaching methodology, assessment and evaluation, trends/issues, research, and linguistics. A unique feature of the program is the variety of ways in which Second-Language Education components are combined -- preparing students to adapt methods, materials and curricula as appropriate to settings and learners in the U.S. and abroad. Second-Language Education practitioners may work with adults, teens, or children in a variety of settings. Some teach foreign languages in public or private elementary, secondary or post-secondary institutions (FLEd), while others teach English in other countries (EFL), or, in this country, to speakers of other languages (ESOL); again in a variety of institutional settings.
The Second Language Education and Culture Specialization Area faculty also offer doctoral degree options (Ph.D. or Ed.D.) for those students who already have at least one year of formal full-time teaching experience at any instructional level and who further wish to develop knowledge and skills in teaching, learning, and assessment of second-languages; including Foreign Languages and ESL. While the bulk of Doctoral degree work is comprised of a variety of college, department, and specialty-area core courses, its uniqueness lies in the effort to meet the second-language student’s special area of interest within the Second-Language curriculum. Special interests might include a minor concentration in: (1) a particular level; such as, elementary, secondary, post-secondary, or adult education; (2) a specific educational specialty like, administration, supervision, curriculum development, counseling, or special education; or (3) related content areas like linguistics, language, literature, international business, anthropology, educational testing and measurement, instructional technology, and other areas of study which might be available on the campus and in which the student might gain some degree of supporting expertise.

NOTE: EDCI 788 (Selected Topics in Teacher Education) and EDCI 798 (Special Problems in Teacher Education) may be taken more than once upon consultation with advisor.
Students should be taking courses at the 600 level or above for their doctoral program. In some instances, the doctoral student may not have taken some of the foundational courses that are helpful (although not necessarily required) for gaining the most from the advanced courses listed above. In such a situation, the advisor has the prerogative of recommending one or more foundational course(s) to be taken as part of the doctoral program.
