Graduate Studies in English/ Literacy/
Speech/ Theatre Education
Graduate Program options in English, Literacy, Speech Communication
and Theatre Education provide advanced study opportunities for individuals
planning to conduct research and to teach at the university, community
college, senior high, middle/junior high, or elementary school levels
with specialization in aspects of English language arts curriculum,
teaching, student learning, and/or teacher education. As part of
their programs, candidates typically build their backgrounds in
supporting academic discipline areas (e.g., literature, written
communication, language, theater, speech communication, rhetoric,
media literacy, and/or reading) as well as deepen their professional
knowledge and abilities in teaching, student learning, assessment,
technology, curriculum design, and teacher development.
Program options include a specialization for experienced ELA teachers
within the M.Ed. Teacher Leadership track,
an MA specialization, and doctoral level specializations
for both the Ph.D. and the Ed.D. A new M.Ed. option which emphasizes
teaching and learning in middle school education is under development.
In all options, candidates have the opportunity, with the guidance
of a program advisor, to design their programs to meet their specific
professional goals.
Faculty members include Joseph L. McCaleb (Ph.D., University of
Texas), and Wayne H. Slater (Ph.D., University of Minnesota).

ENGLISH, LITERACY, SPEECH COMMUNICATION AND THEATER EDUCATION Specialization Area
(Ph.D. and Ed.D Options)
EDCI Department Core: (minimum 18 credits)
All EDCI doctoral students must meet the Department Core Requirements.
Specialty Courses: (minimum 15 credits)
Recommended: EDCI 640, EDCI 642, EDCI 644, EDCI 673, EDCI 740, EDCI 741, EDCI 745, EDCI 840, EDCI 841
Other courses may be taken with advisor approval from following departments: English, Comparative Literature, Anthropology, American Studies, Psychology, Women’s Studies, Communication, Linguistics, History, Classics, Theater, Film, Hearing and Speech, Journalism, Human Development, or Philosophy.
Electives: (minimum 15-21 credits)
