Elementary Education
The Department of Curriculum and Instruction offers undergraduate and graduate programs that lead to teacher certification in Elementary Education.

Degree: Bachelor of Science Major Code: 0802P
Program Description:
This program is intended for students seeking certification to teach grades 1-6 and middle school. Because elementary teachers are generalists in a sense, content courses consist of a broad distribution of liberal arts classes (e.g., science, mathematics, history, social sciences, music, arts). This program also includes an eighteen-credit Area of Emphasis.

The Area of Emphasis allows students to acquire some depth in a specific curricular area and prepares them to teach this area of study in a departmentalized setting and/or middle school. The Area of Emphases, which have been developed based upon national accreditation standards, include Communications, Literature, Math, Foreign Language, Science, and/or Social Studies. A listing of approved courses is available in the Office of Student Services (1204 Benjamin).

Guidelines for Letters of Recommendation
One letter must come from a university professor/instructor/graduate assistant who can address your academic abilities.   The other two letters should come from previous or present employers or supervisors of a volunteer experience (you may get one from your EDCI 280 experience).

•  Letters should be on letter-head
•  Letter should indicate in what capacity the writer has known the candidate, and     for how long
•  If professor, indicate the student's performance in the class - how successful,
•  If employer or mentor teacher - should indicate success with working with     children
•  Should address inter-personal skills and professionalism
•  Recommendations for success in a teaching field

You should pick up the letter of recommendation and submit it as a package with your admissions materials.   Do not have the writer send the letter to the college.   You may want to make a copy for your files.
